There have been a couple of notable GOP exceptions, like Don Bacon and Rand Paul publicly denouncing the extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean. And a few others I assume have been gently pushing back behind the scenes. But since Mike Johnson is fighting for his leadership there is no meaningful GOP check on Trump. He will cling to Trump until he's ousted. And the self-perpetuating pro-Trump propaganda channels seem to be still all in.

I hope there's a breaking point that comes sooner rather than later. But other than an electoral wipeout in the midterms, where does it begin? MAGA still controls all the GOP leadership outside of elected officials. It seems you either cater to MAGA or resign before a primary.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

MAGA controls everything until they don't. It'll happen slowly then all at once.

I'm not optimistic this happens before the midterms, or even immediately following the midterms. But stuff like his tweet this morning hastens the downfall by allowing a few people here and there to break ranks. And makes him a little more of a lame duck. He will continue to exploit all power he can from the executive branch and will unkind he is removed or his term ends. But Johnson's ability to keep his members in check will start to give way eventually.

I agree with this. I think we are already seeing the cracks widen. MTG is an obvious one. Epstein files is another. Many republicans are not in favor of Trump's treatment of Ukraine either.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

          • At this point I'm skeptical that anything will derail Trump. If Jan 6th and his behavior after the election didn't, I don't know what will.

I think the biggest chance for Trump to be taken down is if the economy tanks because of tariffs. Who knows if/when something like that will happen.

Maybe this is the off-ramp that finally gets the GOP to scurry from Trump. I hope so.

But there have been so many unused potential off-ramps in the last few years that I wouldn't bet on it. There were more GOP senators and former Trump cabinet members than not that swore off on Trump after 2020. Hell, even Lindsay Graham publicly flagellated himself for his Trump support. And yet here we are, again with Trump not only doing unconstitutional things but being a more terrible human being than he was previously. In for a penny in for a pound, as they say.

And his Reiner screed isn't even out of normal Trump behavior. Remember how he acted with John McCain and John Dingell? I had forgotten about how disgraceful he was with Dingell and his wife. And apparently so did everyone else.

                  • Lol @ David French.

I admire that irrational belief that Trump will finally cross a line and lose support of his base and the Republican party. I used to believe as well, but alas, the glimmer of hope has long since been extinguished.

How do people who are staying with Trump rationalize their continued support (I'm talking about voters, not scared politicians)? If they are rational, they know he is lying, and not just small lies that could have multiple interpretations. How does one continue to support someone so pathological? Is it, "Oh, he's just like the crazy uncle. Says dumb stuff, but he's harmless." Is that how low their expectations have sunk? Or is it, "Well, he shut down the border that I like that." Or, "He's cutting government." (Is he?) I certainly hope it isn't just about owning the libs.

I don't think Trump will lose support from his base, but the squishy GOP voters who just didn't want to vote for the continuation of Biden may start to drift away. Trump's downfall will be democrats winning. Trump will only lose the support of his actual base when he dies. But that base will grow smaller as they die out with him and the new shiny thing appears.

I don't think most people are paying attention, at least not on that level.

                          • As if he would walk back anything disgusting thing he says:

An empathetic person would say although we had disagreements, I abhor their killing and wish their family well. A sociopath makes it all about him (in third person even, the cherry on top), and continues to be vicious a day after they're murdered.

The ball is in your court, GOP. LOL if you thought Trump would make it easier for you to move on.

                            • Bad Trump!

Not many Republicans will abandon him over his remarks. It's too easy to point out the vile things Reiner said about The Donald.

For the record, Reiner is one of my favorite directors, and I laughed at him when I was a kid when he was merely Meathead.

I don't think I've heard a single thing about what Reiner said about Trump. Trump going out of his way to disparage Reiner will likely lead a lot more people to seek out what Reiner said and, probably, agree with it.
