  • Government shutdown. Apparently it's the democrats fault. I don't think that spin is going to ultimately work for the Republicans when they have both houses of Congress and should be able to pass something on their own if they really wanted. At least it won't work on independents. Then it doesn't help when Trump says things like government shutdowns are good.

During his first term Trump hit his worst approval rating toward the end of the 35 day shutdown. After Jan 6th it was worse, but until that point his lowest popularity was toward the end of those 35 days. Currently he's ten points underwater which is already the biggest gap between approve and disapprove he's had during this term. The range of his approve/dissaprove has been tight -- it's been about a six to 10 point spread almost the entire time, but 10 points is the bottom end of it so far. The effects of tye shutdown obviously haven't hit yet other than the fear of it for some people, so it will be interesting to see if it moves it.

Voters typically blame the party who instituted the lock downs. Democrats almost always win the shutdown war because it's mostly the Republicans who are responsible. I think the Dems are banking on the public perception that it is always the Republicans fault. We'll see.

The Dems are also playing with fire. Healthcare costs are going to be their focus, but their policies also share some responsibility for the cost of Healthcare. That will also come into focus.

The democrats are clearly the roadblock here. They are bragging about it.

Agree but I like the fact they are the roadblock and I think they'll have more support from the moderates if they can slow down the craziness of the Trump admin and get them to concede a bit.

I don't get it because when you have both houses and the president, it's not the other party's fault that the party in power can't get all their own members together to end it.

Doesn't the Senate need 60 votes?

The Republicans refuse to make any meaningful concessions. How is that the democrats fault? Not looking for a fight, but what is clear here is that this administration has brought out the worst in people and made politics a literal blood sport. So toxic.

I don't think so for a CR to fund the government.

Looked it up, I guess you're right. So advocates of not removing that barrier should probably be all about encouraging both sides to work it out.

he is defending the secretary of defense declaring half the country being his enemy.

he is defending the president saying he will send troops to defend against democrats.

I am basing my comment on the New York Times "The Daily" podcast this morning that is focused on the shutdown. They present it as a bold gambit by the democrats.

frank's statement is demonstrably false and a borderline personal attack.

Sometimes I yearn for the days when uncle Ted would double, triple, and quadruple down on some stupid MAGA argument just to get the board going...and then I'd talk with him and confirm it was mostly just top-level trolling. The guy was a master at it.
