You're looking at it backwards. This isn't Trump extending anything. This is literally what Elon tried to pull. He basically copied and pasted the same email he sent out to Twitter personnel and sent it to federal employees.

Update: The memo freezing the funds has now been rescinded. They sent out a memo that says, in effect, "We apologise for the fault in the OMB Memo. Those responsible have been sacked."

Update to the update: The rescission of the OMB memo was a lie to get the court case to go away. The freeze is really still on.

It's clearly the latter. Every employee of the federal government is being offered this except for a few areas like the military and a couple of others mentioned in the email which came to my sister in law from a non-government email hosted on an Elon Musk server. No discretion.

I hope so, but all the federal technicians that work for me got the email directly from OPM. Our HRO is trying to get people to wait until clarification comes down through channels before doing anything. And if I lose employees, does that mean I can't backfill them? Otherwise, what kind of savings does that generate? Our employees are so far down on the pay scale that they would get a raise by going to work at Walmart.

There's a ton of rumors and misinformation going on out there. I have no idea where this is going.

Come on man, I'm not the only person who has strong opinions. It's not dumb to have a lot of fear and worry about what's going on our country. I think it was newsworthy as well.

It's going to chaos, that is where it is going. There is so much confusion out there (Is this legal? Will the promises be honored? How will this affect possible future federal employment? What if I resign and a judge rules against this arrangement? Why is someone with no standing or congressional approval - Musk - making decisions over how government money is being spent? etc.) that it would probably be best to sit tight if you enjoy your job and continue to see a future in the civil service. The Feb 6 deadline would be a red flag to me, kind of like those scams where you need to commit "today" because you won't get the same great deal tomorrow. Civil servants have certain protections against getting fired. It must be for cause, not just because someone doesn't like their political views (which rarely come up in the office anyway). Every move (reassignment, RIFs, etc.) will be challenged in court. It is going to be a fiasco, and we taxpayers get to sit by and pay for it.

Again, if Trump doesn't like certain programs, then do the hard work to kill them via a budget negotiation process or change the laws that established those programs.
