Why? You don't believe there are federal crimes worthy of capital punishment? Leave aside whether you agree with the death penalty, because the feds recognize it.

Some of these were prosecuted federally when the state with jurisdiction had done away with the death penalty. Just seems like this is the type of thing we should leave in the hands of states where we can.

Everybody up there called it Denali anyhow and that won't change. I wish I had a better camera in 2004-7.

But why? Can the feds not have their own laws?

Again, not trying to be obtuse, but why leave this to the states entirely?

I don't know about everyone. At least one elementary school in the Kenai Peninsula in the 80s taught it as McKinley. But likely all of the Alaskans and a good majority of the Americans probably referred to it as Denali.

I kind of agree. The federal government has its own criminal code, criminal justice system, and penal system. The federal government decides certain actions constitute criminal conduct under its laws, and punishes offenders accordingly, including through fines and up to imprisonment. Why is this one form of punishment alone left to the states to decide whether to administer or not? If the death penalty should be left to the states, why is imprisonment not also left to the states?

If we just don't like the death penalty, the answer doesn't seem to be to leave it to the states; it is to stop using it.

Ok, let me walk that back a little and not say entirely. But those times really should be the exception. In practice, in the 21st Century, the Federal government has done much more prosecuting of crimes historically left to the states.

                  • Most of this crap is performative. Gulf of America, Mt. McKinley (how did that even get on his radar? what about squaw peak?), a directive to lower prices, directive on free speech, dropping Spanish language. Some things do matter, like withdrawing from WHO and birthright citizenship (although that will need to go to the SC, but why even do this?).

I don't know how this dumb DOGE thing is going to work (it isn't going to get anywhere near the results the true believers think it will, and is more likely to fail miserably with Trump calling it a great success), but why isn't there more pushback from repubs on letting someone who does significant business with the USG being put in charge of anything inside/adjacent to the USG?
                    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I agree with you on the over-federalization of crimes. There are way to many federal crimes on the books that should be left to states and I really don't like the idea of charging and trying someone for a state crime, failing to get a conviction, then charging and trying again for a Fed crime for the same conduct

                          • I don't have social media, but I'm hearing people are automatically subscribed to JD Vance and Trump.

I'm sure those voices on the right who bemoaned Alex Jones getting suspended from YouTube will stand up for these concerns because it is about integrity and not partisanship.

Also curious after Zuckerberg's weird servile bending the knee interview with Rogan where he said he'd move the moderating team to Texas.

EDIT: Looks like it really is a thing:

Hours after Donald Trump was sworn in as president on Monday, some Instagram and Facebook users started noticing that their accounts were suddenly following Pages associated with the new president, first lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The official POTUS and White House Facebook pages are owned and controlled by the current administration, so it's possible that some Facebook users were already following those accounts while President Joe Biden was in office and did not opt to unfollow them once they were transferred to the new Trump administration. But a number of users, who have taken to Reddit to complain about their new unwanted follows, claim they had never elected to follow those official pages before. Others noted that some of the pages they’re following — like this one for Vance — appear to have been created in early January 2025, while the page for Harris is now marked as "archived."

Reddit users also noted on Tuesday that when they searched for hashtags like “#democrats,” “#berniesanders” and “#joebiden” on Instagram they received a pop-up message saying the results have been hidden due to “sensitive content,” while searches for #donaldtrump” and “#republicans” did not trigger a similar flag.

Yahoo News corroborated these results when searching for the same political hashtags on Instagram Tuesday morning. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, the Democratic Party-related terms were no longer hidden.

Facebook's communications director, Andy Stone, responded to the complaints in a post on Threads Tuesday, which acknowledged that there was “an issue affecting people’s ability to search for a number of different hashtags on Instagram — not just those on the left.”

Stone also addressed complaints from those who said they were now following official Trump administration Facebook Pages, explaining that the pages “change when the occupant of the White House changes.” However he did not offer an explanation for those who insist they have never previously followed any of these political accounts.

Facebook, Instagram and Threads are all owned by Meta, the social media conglomerate run by Mark Zuckerberg.
