Maybe the cardiologist shouldn't charge so much?

I have now lived longer in this country than the country of my birth, where I lived for the first 23 years of life. Funny anecdote: my third spawn is at BYU. In preparing to send him, we applied to get him a US passport. Had our appointment at the consulate, met with an official for our interview and she told me they could not process the paper work because of a lack of evidence that I am an American.

I had my US passport with me (the only passport I have), and long form birth certificate. I explained that I file a yearly US tax return, and that I could get my parents and siblings to swear in an affidavit that I am who I say I am. That was not good enough. She needed evidence that I lived in the US several years before his birth.

She wanted grade school and high school transcripts, plus yearbook photos and photos of me in little league baseball uniforms etc. lol ... that's Drumf's America for you!

Maybe I should say honorary Canadian. My wife and 3 of 4 kids are Canadian. My son is looking for ways to get up to the Rockies past the border. If he gets up there I doubt he will leave. Even though my wife got her US citizenship last year the health care issue here has really been weighing on her mind. More of an existential way, at least until our health insurance gets worse (which it has, progressively, for the last 10 years).

On some days I've been known to troll the real estate websites in BC and Alberta. Believe me, I'm not ignorant of the follies of Canadian politics. But it is a relative breath of fresh air when compared to here.

He should go to school. It is less expensive (not counting BYU, which remarkably is just as inexpensive) and there is a student visa agreement between the US and Canada that makes it easy to cross the border with minimal delay.

That is intolerable. But it isn't supposed to happen with since the Affordable Care Act.

This kind of bigotry and callousness toward folks on the American and other heartland by American (or Canadian) urban elites is why we have Trump and the UK has Brexit.

The article I just linked discusses how Canada is horribly polarized politically. And it's the only "developed" country where the Left has retained power.

Developed nations with universal health care are indicated in green, all the rest are 'developing' nations:

How many of those countries make private health insurance illegal like Bernie and Warren's plan?

Which country is responsible for almost all healthcare innovation that benefits the entire planet?

The Left really has found its religion since Christianity. They love to preach and shame.

If you are referring to a two tier system where the wealthy pay more for superior care as compared to what the average person receives then that is, by definition, not "universal health care."

That is the exact system that exists in the US, which leads to scenarios that Cardiac has described.

That being said, I do have supplemental health insurance through my employer. My supplemental insurance can be used to pay for physiotherapy or mental health care. In other words, if I need to see a psychiatrist, or I need physio I don't have to ask for a referral from my family doctor. I can pay for such services up front through my insurance plan.

Eye and dental care are not universally covered, so my supplemental insurance also pays for visits to an eye doctor or dentist.

So not only does the US pay to police the rest of the world, it also pays to provide health care innovations; innovation that its own tax payers can't access. Makes a lot of sense to me

The issue is, I do not think that word means what Americans think it means.

Taxpayers can access healthcare in the US just fine.

Sure, they access it, but they can't pay for it. Hence, Cardiac's tragic observation that patients would rather have died than face a life-time of paying off the debt accrued due to the healthcare they received.
