So looking down the road I can actually see a reasonably realistic scenario where the Court ends up moderating and becomes much more centrist.

Thomas and Alito are currently the two oldest members and have both had some health issues in recent years. Earlier this year there was some pressure from conservatives on Alito to retire but he didn't want to. I don't think he or Thomas want to retire yet, probably out of a combination of ego, and that they're both the beneficiaries of lavish gifts and vacations from multi billionaire friends. Why give that up.

I think regardless of what conservative think tanks say between now and 2028 that they'll both hang on until after the next presidential election. Then a Dem wins and they pass on.

Maybe similar reasons, I don't know. She's not relevant anymore to the direction the Court will go from here so I wasn't thinking about that. Was she the frequent recipient of lavish gifts from her friends? I could be wrong but I'm under the impression it's been happening the most with Thomas and Alito. I think it's really bad form and unsavory no matter which justice is doing it.

There was a time when the Court was the most respected of the three branches and it was in the 90s and early 2000s when I don't think coincidentally their rulings were consistently right down the middle. I tend to think the country really needs that again and I'm just being hopeful at the moment that I can see a potential path to getting there.

They aren't helping themselves when they do things like invent a new legal theory like the Major Questions Doctrine in 2012 to check executive branch power but then only apply it to Democrat presidents despite the current one being as overreaching as he is.

Put me in the camp that thinks scotus is doing just fine and in fact is doing a great job ruling based on the constitution. Just becasue they rule in a way that you don’t like doesn’t mean they were wrong.

For instance, today the scotus denied missouris bid to use a new map that would have been favorable to republicans. If there’s one branch of government that is doing its best to keep us from being a banana republic it’s been scotus by a mile.

Not every decision is wrong, fortunately. But the decisions of some of them when it comes to the constitution is troubling. Like for example, 4 of the 9 couldn't agree that birthright citizenship is in there even though it is, in plain language.

I haven’t read any actual opinions. That would be way too boring and useless for me. I’ve read plenty of summaries and opinions including non partisan podcasts and analysis. People are putting way too much of their own biases and politics into their own opinions of the court.

I think the fact that even Gorsuch took issue with this should give critics pause.

I think the outcome was right, but the other side had a better argument than a lot of people give it credit for.
