I love that the Colonel wants a return to our "constitutional republican government" and has no problem with Trump trampling our Constitution to make it happen.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostThis whole flag flying thing is getting out of control... So if you fly your flag the right way up then does that make you an American commie.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

What's funny is that Colonel's tweet is the kind of thing that makes me associate the upside down flag with right wing batshitery. Think of the Clive and Ammon Bundy crowd.Originally posted by falafel View Post

I've seen some snippets of an interview with the Alito neighbor. She seemed pretty credible. The timeline the Alitos put out there is not consistent with was otherwise happened. I think the country is awash in normalcy bias. That means just because something hasn't happened it won't. History is rife with examples of what people - both as groups and individuals do and are capable of. I think there is a sense that just because we have avoided totalitarianism it won't happen. Just because there hasn't been a lot of recent instances of justices on the court being swayed or influenced by petty bias doesn't mean that won't happen or isn't happening. J6 wasn't normal. Coups, successful or not aren't an American tradition. But one did happen and our tepid and divided responses almost guarantees a repeat if the offenders are yet again aggrieved by election results they don't like.

For whatever reason, authoritarian politics are having a day globally. I'm not sure what the cause of it is.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Tribalism. This is rooted, IMO, in immigration from the developing world and the results of less economic opportunity. There is still great economic opportunity but generally only for the capitalist and technocrat class.Originally posted by falafel View PostFor whatever reason, authoritarian politics are having a day globally. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I also think that for a long time political elites have sought to delegitimize our political institutions when things don't go their way. Now, in my analysis this is more a bottom up response and they have just been throwing the masses the red meat they want to hear but as folks lose faith in the system they will always look for a savior in the political realm-and autocrats are always the first to fill that void.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View Post

Dude, this is thread for talking about SCOTUS stuff. I refuse to engage in any handwringing, whether legitimate or contrived. Sounds painful.Originally posted by falafel View Post
