This is pretty wild. Russians have been trying to manufacture goods that were made with 100% russian parts/supply, but it is a facade - they have been faking it. They rely heavily on foreign parts.

I was talking to an Exxon engineer on sunday and asked him about their Russian operations, which they've decided to divest. He asked me who would buy them, to which I said they'd likely just get nationalized, which isn't far fetched at this point. But he did say that most of the plants and operations are ran by Russian nationals, which isn't always the case in O&G. With those international projects, most of the management comes from the West while the lower level workers are locals, but I think in Russia there's a decent amount of people that are actually Russian that are in management positions.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThis is pretty wild. This means they won't fold over and die when Exxon/BP/Shell leave (like what happened in Venezuela) but over time I highly doubt they'll be as efficient as they are now. These large O&G companies all come from capitalist economies and hinge on low cost, efficient operations and the technology they produce to get there consistnetly gets better every year. Russia will begin to lose that and they liekly don't have the ability or capital to do their own R&D. I guess they could resort to stealing the tech, like China does, but operating an oil field or a gas plant isn't very easy...just ask Venezuela.
Of course, maybe Saudi Aramco will help them out seeing as how they will pick up the phone when Putin calls but not when Biden calls."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Let's give all the "nerds" describes in that thread green cards and welcome them to this country. Brain drain Russia to death. Attracting smart foreigners used to be our specialty. I think all the hullabaloo over the fighter jets is misguided. What difference are they really going to make? Most of russia's shelling is coming from on the ground artillary or from ships of the southern coast. Russia's air force is massive but haven't been used that much. A handful of planes isn't going to do much I'm afraid. Why risk the escalation for such little benefit?

Not an expert on what Mig-92s can do (are they effective in supporting ground troops?), but the Ukrainians seems to think they are important. Plus its just another step in messaging to Puten our resolve to support Ukriane. Its says that we will not be cowed in by his threats.
Seems like everyone wants to ge those aircraft to Ukraine. I expect it will get done.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Interesting development.
China signals shift on Ukraine as Russia accused of atrocities
Hinting at China's growing alarm over Russia's invasion, Xi also called for "maximum restraint to prevent a large-scale humanitarian crisis," as the number of civilian casualties mount, including children.
This was "Beijing's strongest indirect pushback yet on Moscow's escalating violence in Ukraine," U.S. risk advisory Eurasia Group said in a report.
Xi, who is looking to secure an unprecedented third term in office later this year, also used the term "war" for the first time, according to an English statement issued by the foreign affairs ministry, after Chinese officials had earlier stuck to Russia's description of the offensive as a "special military operation."

This sounds like a really bad thing: Russian Airstrike Hits Maternity Hospital in Ukrainian City of Mariupol - WSJ
There's a special place in hell for people that target the innocent during war, but there's an even more special place when those innocent people truly have no way to either flee or defend themselves.A Russian airstrike hit a maternity hospital in the besieged city of Mariupol and buried people including children under rubble, Ukrainian authorities said, marking what is expected to be a more vicious phase of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Footage released by the Mariupol mayor’s office showed wounded people being taken out of the hospital complex, which appeared severely damaged by the attack. Images from the hospital showed a large bomb crater and indications that the blast, which took place around 5 p.m., had knocked down trees and torched cars. Details about casualties weren’t yet available."Discipleship is not a spectator sport.
