    • Ukraine was talking about the unusual activity of Russian ships in the Black Sea, apparently trying to recover our drone.

Russian naval units currently stationed in the Black Sea include four missile carriers, one of which is underwater, Humeniuk said on national television.

          • I applaud Ukraine's forces for holding Bakhmut as they have. Russia's ineptness continues to impress. Is Ukraine like Rocky? Let Russia wear itself out and then unleash the pain back on them.

            https://www.reuters.com/world/europe...ds-2023-03-20/

Ukrainian troops, on the defensive for four months, will launch a long-awaited counterassault "very soon" now that Russia's huge winter offensive is losing steam without taking Bakhmut, Ukraine's top ground forces commander said on Thursday.

The remarks by Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi were the strongest indication yet from Kyiv that it is close to shifting tactics, having absorbed Russia's onslaught through a brutal winter.

I wonder how many troops Russia has lost in Bakhmut.

It's a meat grinder. I've seen estimates in the 10's of thousands.

The battle is decimating Wagner mercenary forces. Some analysts are saying that it is a deliberate move by Putin to weaken Prigozhin as a political rival. Is Putin that calculating?

I would not put it past him. However, Occam's razor might suggest that it's the same ineptness we've been seeing from Russia throughout the war.

He is that calculating. In Chechnya he has the FSB bomb an apartment complex to turn public opinion.

I don't think the military COC structure is that clear wrt Wagner, or other PMCs. I think Prighozen cornered himself with his bluster about Wagner success during the Ukrainian counteroffensive last fall and politically he has no choice but to take Bahkmut or else his star will fade with the Russian public. I am sure Putin is pleased at the resources Wagner is exhausting and there are clear issues between the Russian MoD and Prighozen/Wagner/PMCs, I think the result of the lack of Russian MoD command and control structure of PMCs, but I think most of this is Prighozen's own doing. He left himself without any other recourse.

I think we have learned that Russia is incapable of taking land from Ukraine. The rest of the year ought to disclose whether or not Ukraine, with all its western equipment, can take land back from a dug in Russia who has time to prepare defenses. I think to keep Western support Ukraine must demonstrate that they are capable of taking land back with the donated modern armored equipment. I think they ought to be able to counterattack and take back occupied territory.
