The House State Affairs Committee voted 13-4 to hold a bill in committee that would have added sexual orientation and gender identity to the Idaho Human Rights act, in effect killing the bill Thursday. The committee includes five Mormons, all of whom voted against it. The reason, they said, lies at the crux of the Mormon Church’s argument that with LGBT protections must come protections for people of faith.
They are just following the churches example of an eye for an eye.

Being a more rural state it's going to be more conservative. Also a lot of gay kids that grow up in eastern Idaho find their way down to SLC so I would say that Idaho, at least eastern Idaho will always be behind Utah when it comes to gay issues and rights.

Rural Idahoans are probably too busy getting behind sheep to get behind gay rights issues.

In order to eliminate the Mormon vote in Idaho permanently, representatives in the convention carefully worded Article 6, sections 3 and 4 of the Constitution in order to disenfranchise Mormons. They wanted to make sure that the language was clear enough that Mormons could not find a loophole to get around disenfranchisement. But they also wanted to make sure that the state legislature could not take the right to vote away from any other religious or civic organization.

            • Oklahoma state legislature responds to gay marriage development by abolishing marriage licenses and having all marriages approved by clergy only.

              What a crazy state.

“Marriage was historically a religious covenant first and a government-recognized contract second. Under my bill, the state is not allowing or disallowing same-sex marriage. It is simply leaving it up to the clergy.”
Oh great. Then the clergy gets to decide who gets married, and then by extension who gets the rights and privileges with marriage. What could go wrong?

I like the move, although marriage by clergy shouldn't result in transfer of government benefits. Get the state out of the marriage business.

If I understand correctly, that is not what they're doing. Or at best, they're doing it in a really messy fashion.

Yeah, I thought the same thing as Creekster, but then further in the article it gets really, really messy. It's like burning down the house to kill a mouse.

And Oklahoma is a crazy place. It's one place I'd never live.

Pretty sure that we already covered this in the Better Call Saul thread. Oklahomans just have a Mormony vibe. No surprise here.

That's a fairly common sentiment, but if you think about it, what does that really mean? Marriage is a contract that brings with it certain rights and priviledges and those rights are recognized and enforced by the government. So how do you remove the government from the marriage business? What system would replace it?

Seems like one of those things that sound good in theory, but the devil is in the details.

                              • In case you are wondering what they are thinking on the other end of the political spectrum, here is the "progressive secular humanist" take on the OK situation.

                                http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progres...ople-of-faith/

For the record, marriage is a legal contract between two consenting adults, and as a legal contract it is governed by the state. A wedding, on the other hand, may or may not be a religious ceremony, depending upon the wishes of the couple.

If conservative Christians could only understand this simple and basic distinction, which in many ways mirrors the constitutional distinction between church and state, a great deal of time, energy, and taxpayer money could be saved, and used towards more productive ends.
