I agree with you. I'm not ripping on lawyers, but I imagine that a lawyer crafted the wording of this policy (or at least someone with a legalistic thought process--like a bureaucrat suffering a life of quiet desperation over not having gone to law school). You don't want to put kids in compromising situations or pit parents against kids. If we give it no thought beyond that, the position is wholly defensible from a common decency standpoint. If you'll allow me to restate what you said, it's when, as you clearly noted, we think about the ramifications, even in straight families, that the logic doesn't hold up so well.

Yes, we are on the same page. The rationale makes sense, the problem is that it is still a horrible rationale.
