No points. Every now and then I just like to throw a few peanuts. Like a chimp throwing turds to scatter the crowd, it amuses no one except the chimp.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI have no idea what point the monkey is trying to make (I've read his posts above several times and still don't get it) but it's fun to watch him go after JL. OK, no worries.Originally posted by SandYFan View PostI'm sorry if I came across that way. You can definitely criticize Ms. Davis to your heart's content. Ha. Nobody has declared victory over anything. Knock it off.Originally posted by creekster View PostAh, again with the peanuts reference. This is like your personal Vietnam strategy; declare victory and go home, whether or not you actually win.
You don't care about this specific example, yet this example defines the very context or pattern for what I was referencing in regard to red-herring appeals to consistency. You are going to all this trouble to make sure we know that there are other contexts where consistency really matters?Originally posted by creekster View PostLook, I don't care about this specific example. But your assertion that consistency is the dumbest way to analyze an issue is a categorical assertion that goes beyond this thread topic (as many of our discussions here do). Consistency is sometimes a very important consideration and is often the paramount consideration. If you think it is dumb to use it here, then you can say so, but to ridicule someone on the grounds that it is ALWAYS dumb and intellectually lazy does not advance the discussion nor add to the stated topic. Moreover, to do so while intentionally misquoting the authority you cite (why leave off the word foolish? It makes all the difference between supporting your position and not supporting it) is at least sloppy and at worst intellectually dishonest.
Now if you want to say that his example is inapplicable because it is "tu quoque" then go ahead. Your indictment of his position in response to my post was much clearer and on point than your original broad-brush fallacy. (btw, I am not sure he was presenting a "tu quoque position, as he was not suggesting the clerk's position was wrong based on her past inconsistent acts, but he was arguing that there is apparent bias in observers; but I am not a logician and am likely wrong about that.) So why not be specific, especially given that you are apparently hoping to tightly focus the discussion on the thread topic?
As to the constitution, who said we were going to undermine it? This sports (and more!) board is all just talk. Nothing we do here ever affects much of anything important. My point is that consistency is, sometimes, the most important factor. And there are important examples that prove this.
Uh.... OK.
Here is the deal. You almost never jump in and express your opinion on these things. You nitpick semantics and misspelled names and the omission of words like "foolish" rather than addressing the main topics of discussion. If I ask you your opinion you will respond with something snarky like "Why do I have to give my opinion?" That is totally fine, but I find it quite funny that you would get bent out of shape when I decline to defend my alleged lack of consistency.Originally posted by creekster View PostI'm OK being in the peanut gallery, btw. I like the cheap seats. My kind of people. it's just that sometimes hyperbole goes too far for me."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

There's a special spot in Hell for County Clerks who won't issue gay marriage licenses.

It's early for me, so I might not be reading this Des News article correctly, but wow:
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...sexuality.html
I kept waiting for the 'we should love our gay family members but not support sin' angle, but it never showed up. Just love and acceptance. And a repudiation of Oaks' teachings about how to deal with gay partners in your own home, attending gay weddings, etc.
It doesn't happen much around here, but kudos to Des News for a great article."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."
