Bloomberg just pulled the plug on Sunday's marathon.

I woman I know who lives in Brooklyn has been working non-stop to assist in clean up, help meet people's need's, etc. since the storm ended. Her timeline has been full of instructions of where people can meet to help, what sorts of things are needed, etc. She and others have been calling it "occupy Sandy." Anyway, today she posted this on her timeline:

These two women came from the Netherlands to run in the marathon today. Instead of moping about the event being cancelled, they spent their time volunteering on Staten Island. Saw so many people in running gear today, helping New Yorkers remove debris from their houses. Makes sense-- because nobody who signed up for a marathon is afraid of hard work.

Pretty awesome.

Here's a nice video of the Mormon Helping Hands clean-up effort. I got a little choked up to see my daughter boarding one of the buses to go help (the ponytailed redhead at approx. 1:10). One can mock the self-aggrandizing nature of the video, but I think it's great and that this is the future of our missionary effort.
