  • The Official Hurricane Sandy Thread

Seems like we should have a dedicated spot to discuss this storm. Looks like it could be historic.

Anyone know why that Bounty replica was out at sea this morning?

Things are starting to pick up here now with high winds and rain.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Watching CNN is mindblowing. Even before the big hit they're showing streets in Long Island that are completely flooded.

That makes my nipples hard. Back in the day my prayers to the false God ODIN got me out of many parades, but for the lads and ladies at of the 1st Infantry MDW there are no such breaks.

It even makes me feel something bordering on patriotism, which I usually dismiss as nationalism.

You have spent too much time in the patronizing halls of academia. Patriotism is OK - especially US patriotism. Nationalism is generally based upon ethnicity and the American experiment is one of ideas - vastly different than the disasters of nationalism so prevalent in our world history. I know nationalism, as I spent a year of my life babysitting the destroyed area of Brcko, Bosnia-Herezegovenia. Patriotism is a gift of the spirit, or something like that!

We have had steady rain now since 6pm last night. Steady wind with a few big gusts here and there but nothing damaging so far. All is well thus far.

Oh, I'm patriotic, but I don't fool myself that the accident of my being born here makes my country the best one, as so many seem to do--everywhere in the world. I'm almost an American Exceptionalist, but there's too much blood in the name of national interests. I love America because of our laws, our freedoms, our culture, and our fairness. I also like that class doesn't mean as much here as other places. I also like that we have the best junk food in the world after Canada.

I love to travel the world, but there is no place like home.
