Kill Newt's Chances of Winning the Republican Nomination for President of the US
This is a lot like what we saw back in 2008. Everybody in the media and most people were saying what a great speaker Obama was. I never thought so. Now, almost all republicans, and many democrats have determined that Obama is not a good speaker at all.
This is the place to go for the real skinny on Pres. Obama's speaking ability:
“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
― W.H. Auden
"God made the angels to show His splendour - as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity. But men and women He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of their minds."
-- Robert Bolt, A Man for All Seasons
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
--Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Given a chance, I believe most Republicans would vote for Bill Clinton over nearly any of the Republican candidates this year.
I like Mitt and think he would probably be a respectable President. But I can't think of a truly wonderful candidate nominated by the Republican Party in my lifetime. Yay, Nixon, Ford, GHW Bush, Bob Dole, GWB, McCain, Newt/Rumneh...
(Reagan was nominated over the gritted teeth and much to the chagrin of the GOP establishment.)
LOL. Ummm, no. Billy Jeff was/is a scumbag and is anti second ammendment.
Despite some cherry picking of his record, taking in total Reagan was a genuine conservative, the real deal, "one of us", etc. He was the freaking man.

Let me rephrase that, leaving out the personal character flaws of WJC. Whomever the Republican party nominates this time around will likely be, on the political spectrum, either at the same spot or to the LEFT of Bill Clinton on most issues. Romney and Gingrich both have supported cap-and-trade for CO2, both support a mandate for healthcare insurance, both will favor 'nation-building' (invading) for Iran, etc.
I don't know where Romney and Gingrich stand on the 2nd amendment. But remember that there is a very high standard required to fully remove a Constitutional Amendment; it cannot be removed easily (2/3 vote of House and Senate, plus 3/4 of state legislatures IIRC). Yes, it can be chipped away bit by bit...
Reagan was great in many ways. He was also anathema to the party, and they were horrified when he was nominated (recall GHWB was the nominee 'chosen' and desired by the party). His nomination was the triumph of the Republican 'man on the street' over the R party of K Street.
Looks like he reported to the director for public policy. Hmmmm, that can only mean one thing....lobbyist!
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

You sound ridiculous. Do you follow politics? Romney and Giongrich to left of Clinton on most issues? Can you name one? Three?

Bill Clinton was a big government liberal when he had a democratic congress. He supported a single payer system (Hillarycare) and my guess is would have supported cap and trade (as he does now) if it was an issue back then. Some look back fondly on those days now, but Bill Clinton was dragged kicking and screaming into the whole "the era of big government is over" thing. But hey, he finally went along with welfare reform and spending cuts, so good for him. He's better than Obama, I'll give him that.
He tried to gut the 2nd ammendment. Assault weapons ban, putting the screws to S&W, all sorts of propsed regulations, 500% ammo taxes, Janet Reno, etc., and just a general hostile tone. With the constitution, it doesn't need to be ammended anymore, just "reinterpreted". Viola, rights gone. Bill Clinton nominated SC judges who are hostile the the 2nd Ammendment.
I agree with your Reagan comments, I was initially responding to your statement that we hadn't had a good GOP candidate in your lifetime. Unless you're under 25 I disagree, Reagan was a good one, not perfect or always right, but as good as we could've hoped for IMO.
So in the debate tonight Newt talked about campaigning with Goldwater.

The dude is so full of it. The other day Glenn Beck played various clips of him praising the holy trinity of liberal progressivism, TR, Wilson, and FDR.
Newt, per Robert Novak, was a Rockefeller Republican who was never really comfortable as a social conservative but put it on as a good political persona.
