  • This point has likely already been made in this thread; it is too long, and at times too depressing to read it all.....

Those wanting to become cops will become an even more self-selecting group. The only type of personality drawn to law enforcement, in the current environment, will increasingly be those who want power and control. The previous generations who joined the force for a stable income, respectable profession, or the desire to "help the community" will look for other careers. IMO, these personalities are more likely to escalate problems, and to feel they are being victimized thus seeing more people as life-threatening hostiles.

From my very limited outsider knowledge this phenomena has existed in the special forces of the military for a long time. Due the high completion, and extreme mental and physical demands those who who apply and can make it through the training usually have a lot of same personality traits. The primary difference seems to be, the military spends countless hours and dollars training these men and women, whereas the Police Academy even Steve Guttenberg, a dude who makes funny noises, and Kim Cattrell were all able to make it through with honors.

    • NYC officially reported less than half the amount of people killed by NYPD activity.

      Some of the grim statistics:

The Health Department’s findings, compiled in a 2017 draft report, were striking: Though fewer people per capita die at the hands of the police in New York than in almost any other place in the United States, the city was significantly underreporting the deaths. The review also found that the incidence of deaths at the hands of the police was five times higher for black New Yorkers than for whites.
Dr. Bassett’s team identified 105 people killed by the police or police activity during the period from 2010 to 2015, more than double the 46 the agency had publicly reported for those years. Of the unreported deaths, 13 were bystanders hit by police bullets or pedestrians killed from vehicle accidents during police activity. The team also found deep racial disparities in the deaths. For example, six black New Yorkers and five Hispanic residents who died as a result of encounters with the police during this period were unarmed; no unarmed whites were killed.

Maybe the NYPD will try to make up for this by giving folks a cop free holiday...

NYPD may go on strike on July 4 so city can have its 'independence' from cops as tension builds between law enforcement and protesters
        • Multiple cops said they have been sent messages urging them to call out sick on Independence Day because New Yorkers do not 'honor us'
        • 'NYPD cops will strike on July 4th to let the city have their independence without cops,' reads one of the messages, which called for the strike to start at 3pm
        • A different message also calls for an Independence Day strike and talks about the #Bluflu - the slang name for a large sickout by cops
        • It gives instructions for cops to call in sick, going as far as showing up for work and asking for an ambulance to take them home sick
        • It is not clear if the messages have been written by other NYPD cops
        • The potential sickout comes as the NYPD has come under fire after cops have been caught on camera violently attacking George Floyd protesters
        • NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio this week announced sweeping measures to make the NYPD more transparent including a new disciplinary database
        • In Atlanta, cops called in sick Wednesday and Thursday in protest of charges against the cop who shot dead Rayshard Brooks

This may be a good time for NYC folks to pick up a new TV or become free of someone they don't like...

New police reforms came Thursday as the NYPD released its latest crime stats.

Shooting in Seattle protest zone leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

A pre-dawn shooting in a park in Seattle's protest zone killed a 19-year-old man and critically injured another person, authorities said Saturday.

The shooting happened about 2:30 a.m. in the area near the city's downtown that is known as CHOP, which stands for “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest," police said.

Officers responding to the shooting initially said they had trouble getting to the scene because they were "were met by a violent crowd that prevented officers safe access to the victims,” police said on their blog. Video released later in the day by the Seattle Police appears to show officers arriving at the protest zone saying they want to get to the victim and entering as people yell at them that the victim is already gone.

Two males with gunshot wounds arrived in private vehicles at Harborview Medical Center about 3 a.m., hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg said. The 19-year-old man died, and the other person was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

CHOP Medic Intervened in a Sexual Assault in Cal Anderson

On Thursday afternoon a volunteer medic from the Capitol Hill Organized Protest intervened in a sexual assault occurring inside a tent in Cal Anderson park, stopping the situation from escalating any further, according to a police report of the incident.

The victim, signing through an ASL interpreter, told police a man "lured" her into the tent with an offer of food. While inside, he "started to hold her arms and touch her, kissing her face in the process," according to the report. She tried to sign, "Do not touch," but then he pulled her onto the bed while covering her mouth and telling her not to scream, got on top of her, grabbed her breast and buttocks, and tried to take off her clothes.

A nearby medic overheard the attack, intervened, and waited with the victim until the cops arrived. They arrested him "without incident."

Today a King County Superior Court judge found probable cause to hold Robert James for the incident on suspicion of indecent liberties, and set bail at $75,000. Last February James caught a misdemeanor harassment case in Seattle Municipal Court.

          • Germaine to this and other threads here. How do police spend their day?

Violent crimes make up ~1 percent of calls to police, and take up ~4% of an average day, in multiple large urban areas.
