  • I fear the gap between the "we are entitled" and "we are oppressed" folks vs the "we have to make it on our own" and " we need discipline and order" groups is growing wider and wider. It isn't all about income equality either. Millions of people who make average to below average wages are in the "our responsibility" crowd. Many, many very wealthy are in the people are entitled and oppressed crowd. They are on top of the ladder and don't care so much that they will hand out more of the money those who are climbing the ladder make.

What does this have to do with this thread? The policeman went overboard. In today's climate his offense is a firing offense. The publicity though can't help but reinforce those young people (not all young people) who have disdain for following order. If they want to cause trouble or infringe on others, they will dang well do it.

I remember talking to a young man who had shoplifted. He saw nothing wrong because he was just ripping off a major corporation who rips off the public. Of course he heard it from some lib on TV bemoaning the evil corporations. It was too long ago to have been Liz Warren, but I am sure it was one of her types who he had heard talking.

I really don't. Especially compared to those on the far left and far right.

I do appreciate though you labeled it embelish as opposed to claiming I made it up.

Good grief, I too found his remark absurdly hyperbolic.

I think the warrior came out when he knew that the Pee Wee Herman trip and roll was going to God viral, he was trying to compensate.

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                    • Interesting how this McKinney, TX story changed over several days.

Obviously, everyone has their own ideas of what happened, but to summarize, this is what seemed to me was the story that was told and how it changed.

First was the shocking video that everyone has seen with the out of control cop and the girl on the ground and then he gets up and pulls a gun. So we get the outrage and protests about that.

Then over the next couple of days we get the predictable "FoxNews angry old folks" type response that this cop was wrong but he was just trying to do his job to respond to this fight caused by these irresponsible thugs who crashed a party at a pool where they didn't belong and therefore had to been up to no good. This is somewhat backed up by the word of some older white residents.

Well, then it turned out that story gets contradicted by the word of the white teens who were there who say this "fight" started with a cantankerous older white woman resident who was directing rude/racist comments toward the black kids who were there and who were legimately invited to be there by some white teen friends who lived there. So then when both the black and white kids called her out for her inappropriate comments, she went ballistic and started hitting some of the kids. Then another video has surfaced showing who is probably this woman they were talking about acting crazy and still trying to hit some of the kids even while the cops are already there. Along with this we have again, the white teens who were there, including the one who was took the original video saying that the cops were only going after the black kids and were ignoring the white ones. They were also giving confusing and contradictory instructions, so the crowd didn't really know what to do.

Then you have the official statements and apology from the police department which said the cop in question acted inappropriately and went against his training. The cop apologizes and resigns and cites work-related stress because he had already responded to two suicide calls earlier that day.

Then you have the organized activists on other side still not satisfied with the response of the Police department calling for more punishment for the cop and criticizing the department for letting him resign instead of firing him and taking all his benefits.

I think the cop had 10 years of honorable military service. I think he was once cop of the year. He screwed up.

What is it exactly the activists want? He lost his job. Will have a hard time getting a really good job in the future is my guess. He and his family are receiving death threats.

So do they want him charged with assault? Why don't they just settle with the city out of court and get their money that way instead of running the policeman through the ringer.

By the way, the kid that took the video and was interviewed reminded me of Eric Cartman.

I agree the activists are trying to push it too far. I know there is anger. I know the cop acted inappropriately, but he has quit his job and recognizes his error, IMO. I also don't think this suburb of Dallas or the police there are inherently racist. I actually live here, and the neighborhood where this happened is just a couple of miles from where I live. Unlike more backward places, like say, Missouri, people of all races live in these affluent Dallas suburbs and get along very well. I take my young kids to our neighborhood's private pool where white, black, hispanic and asian neighbors hang out and have fun, and race is completely a non-issue. In my perception, the crazy old white redneck lady who seems to be the one who started the mess are the exception around here and by far not the rule, IMO.

Anyone know why there was a fight amongst the teenagers? Was one of the teenagers fighting the crazy old red neck ladies grandkid?

It would have been better if it had been a crazy old white male redneck that caused the problem. Fits the stereotype better.

                            • The cop screwed up. But his screw up didn't result in the horrible consequences that it could've if he'd actually felt the need to fire his weapon. He has since resigned and won't be in a position to make that mistake again in the future.

I'm absolutely sure that the PD is now reviewing policy and requiring mandatory training for all of their officers to avoid anything similar happening in the future.

If anything - it seems to me like this is how you would want things to work out after an incident like this.

The fight wasn't amongst the teenagers. It was a crazy white redneck woman who started it by shouting racist crap at some of the black kids, at which both the black and white kids there took issue with, after which she went ballistic and started hitting some of the kids who were there. This has been backed up by a later video that surfaced showing the crazy white woman still going nuts and trying to hit one of the black kids even after the police arrived. And this account has been supported by all the kids who were there who have said anything about it.
