Kind of timely, two young teenage girls were killed in Syracuse, UT on electric scooters. A recent convo with an ER nurse had her saying she would never buy an e-scooter or E-bike for her kids, based on the number of injury she sees come in.
Utah just passed laws this past year to help regulate them.
He’s approaching this with. a heavy hand instead of a more measured approach. But it’s definitely a safety issue, not just to the users but others as well.

Yeah, this is the wrong way to go about it, but the bottom line is these things need regulation. What he should be announcing is that they are putting a temporary restriction on the sales of these within NYC boundaries while the city council works on passing laws to regulate their use on city property and streets. These need to be regulated the same way motorcycles are regulated, because they are just as dangerous. Require a driver's license to use one on city streets, prohibit use on sidewalks and crosswalks, etc.

I was just thinking about that a day or two ago when there was someone riding an e-bike or similar in the bike lane next to me, going nearly thespeed limit on the street. Don't know who it was, if they're licensed to operate motor vehicles, if they have a motorcycle endorsement, or if they have any safety training at all before riding.

I believe Idaho recently proposed and/or passed regulations relating to riding them, but I am not sure.

I don't support going after the retailers for illegal sales unless there were laws on the books that prohibited the sale of those vehicles at the time of the sales.

When we bought our e-bikes years ago I was feeling flush with cash, and I was considering throwing in a onewheel with our purchase. I didn't and still haven't tried one, partly because a friend of a similar age had a freak accident on one. He just bought his and all he did was fall off it while going slowly. He broke his leg.

dang that is scary. Glad you are ok. My daughter wants one. I have veto'd that thus far.

I do think having a scooter at college would be super convenient and make getting around awesome. May have to think about that for my son.

E-bikes are a menace. Draper made a big deal announcement a couple months back that they are illegal on city streets for unlicensed operators and they would be ticketing and/or impounding bikes of children found riding them on public streets or sidewalks. I haven't seen any real decrease in their use so I'm not sure they are actually doing anything.

Mamdani is an economically illiterate moron but e bikes are a HUGE safety issue in Manhattan. I have always been careful about crossing bike lanes but now you literally have to treat them like a freeway lane no matter what the adjacent traffic light shows. Peak out and look both ways before you even consider stepping from the sidewalk over the bike lane even if you have the walk signal. At any moment a DoorDash delivery guy doing 40 mph could literally kill you.

But yeah suing the manufacturers is dumb. Like DH said limit the sales in the city limits and require licenses. Aggressively ticket and impound the bikes of those caught being unsafe. But that would require some aggressive policing which is not something Mamdani is going to go for.
