I've been mulling over Professor YO's exegesis on compromise and it's compelling. My problem (and NWC's I'd guess), is that in turning Trump into a net positive worthy of support, one must necessarily assign, in my view, an inappropriately small amount of negative credits to Trump for his character and ability to govern. But then, I've thought Trump was a terrible businessman and of loathsome moral character since the 1980s. His level of narcissism, historical ignorance, and amorality should disqualify anyone from the world's highest leadership position. That deeply religious people are able to make that kind of compromise is genuinely confounding to me, and to a great many other conservatives. For an explanation I guess I need a psychologist, not a political scientist.

It is my problem as well.

I may be an unsufferable purist here, but in real life I am not immune to emotional decisions. Although I'd like to think that the raging inferno of my Trump hate is righteous, I understand that I have been acted upon by emotional triggers that have stoked this fire. I have Trump supporters in my circle of family and friends. The triggers that lead them to a related conclusion that Trump should be supported because of the depravity of the other side come from a similar complex cauldron of emotions. Of course they are wrong, but I give them grace

I appreciate your response and agree with a lot of it. We don't get to assign and weight credits for other people. They're the ones who get to choose what earns their support. This goes to the ultimate point I'm trying to make. You can disagree with their conclusion, but the confusion is a choice.
