I just think that it's needed more today than when I was a child because kids sit in their rooms all day looking at social media instead of going outside and doing things. The unrealistic expectations caused by social media trickle down to us making us feel inferior or broken, when in fact we aren't. I knew I was a normal kid because I spent significant amounts of time playing sports, camping, hangingout with friends, etc. I didn't need a therapist to tell me that some self doubts I had or some minor event was traumatizing. I knew it already because I experienced life.
I'm not sure we disagree or that you grasped my point. A good therapist wouldn't to tell you that, they'd want to help you figure that out.
There is strong link with ADHD and children in particular and time spent outdoors. Symptoms greatly subside. This was noticed prior to the horrors of social media.

I'm off of social media and I don't miss it.

Anyway, I don't want to continue my thread jack but the twitter therapist guy is weird first for being publicly political. I don't want my clients feeling I have an agenda. I don't and shouldn't. I have seen what happens when others do that:Not with their religious, political or philosophical beliefs. That's a perfect recipe for being unhelpful.

It also harkens back to those lazily ghost written books by Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Bill O'Reilly, Anne Coulter etc where they branded liberalism as evidence of a mental health concerns. Ironically absent is acknowledged these people seem very unaware of their problems and clear ethical deficits.

I'm proud of having done plenty of therapy and haven't been unwilling to disclose, even though I know it'll bring judgment from some. It hasn't always been super helpful but sometimes it has been. Therapist are encouraged to their own "work" which means sometimes going to therapy. If they don't care of themselves arrogance, complacency and all sorts of things can derail them.

Also, I don't believe being liberal or conservative is immoral or unhealthy. Anything can be taken to an extreme.

    • Frank, therapy can be a wonderful thing for people in certain situations. It is also perfectly normal for someone to live their entire life without needing to see a professional therapist. But to say that "everyone should be seeing a therapist" is kind of crazy talk.

Jeff, I didn't say that. I said everyone could benefit from meeting with someone at one point in their life. It is not crazy talk. I'm really not sure why you'd battle this, other than I'm not sure you understand the point I'm trying to make.

It's honestly not controversial, nor am I speaking out of ignorance.

I didn't say everyone should be in therapy constantly or right now Jeff. That everyone should go right this instant. That is certainly not my point of contention. Again, that is not what I am saying or disagreeing with you about.

My original thowaway comment (complete with a "haha"!) led to a half page of responses. Which I mostly ignored.

                  • This clip is pretty wild. Almost every part of his response was a lie.

                    • Possible assasination attempt on Trump playing out right now. He was at the podium, people heard pops, it appears he was hit in the ear, he reached up to feel what had hit him and the Secret Service swarmed him and took him to the ground. The eventually evacuated him. When they stood him up he pumped his fist at the crowd to show he's alright. Crazy.

                        • 'If it was a bullet, it grazed his ear. But with so many "pops", why hasn't there been any report of anyone or anything else having been hit? Not to make light of a very serious situation, but based on the evidence thus far, this would be the most inept marksman in history.

                          • I will wait until the details of the incident and investigations are known to place blame, but this is a glaring reminder that the apocalyptic language used by both the right and left can have deadly consequences.

                            • Good lord. Nothing good about this. This should not be a green light for calls to civil war. If someone thought killing him would solve problems associated with his rise, they got that wrong. Plus making him a martyr realizes the myth he is trying conjure up. This is sickening. Lucky no one was hurt.

                              EDIT:
2 people were killed. How horrible.

                              • Very odd that thus far there have been no eyewitnesses of anyone else, including any assailant, having been hit or injured.
