And Ross Perot had a REAL shot. I mean a REAL, real shot before he dropped out. Hopping back in at the last second maybe did nothing but get Clinton elected, but he had real juice during the cycle."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! Nader ended up with 2.74% of the popular vote in 2000. Perot had 18.9% of the popular vote in '92. I don't know what RFK Jr. will end up with, but the latest polling of independents said something like 39% planned on voting for RFK Jr. And independents make up 49% of the total electorate! Yikes.Originally posted by Commando View Post

How could that be true? The smart people here have said it’s basically samesies if Trump gets reelected because what could he possibly do on the federal level to really mess up our lives and the institutions held last time he attempted a coup!Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostTrump has gutted the RNC and is rebuilding it in his image. I couldn't be more delighted. If you're a Republican running for office in 2024, you're on your own. Trump has no interest in the Republican party. I'm sure it bugs him that it's not called the Trump party. This will be devastating to the Republican party.
Oh, so one of the institutions of our stable democracy is being gutted and key figures are being replaced with lackeys and family members? And the smart people here keep supporting said institution because, checks notes, Spencer Cox and other GOPers are checks against his excesses?Originally posted by LVAllen View Post

I wish I loved something as much as you love strawmen.

And I love how you always say "smart people" and then imply that everyone here is dumber than a bag of hammers. Haha.

Legitimately on the scale of collective intelligence of this group I’m probably mid-low. I’ll readily admit most here are wildly more intelligent than I am.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

For some reason, you and so many other brilliant people that post here, have been suckered by the modern day conservative movement and its current Orange Pied Piper.
I’ll say it again in the last 9 pages people have advocated RFK Jr as a viable third party option, Biden as a crime king pin, trump and Biden reeelctions as being samesies and that Biden is the equivalent of the Clintons when it comes to self dealing.
Those are absolute bonker statements by legitimate smart people.

So if everyone here is legitimately smart, and you constantly think that we are all wrong, maybe this is time for a little introspection. Or the fact is, you don't really believe people here are smart.Originally posted by fusnik View Post

I don't think he constantly thinks people here are wrong about everything. I haven't seen that. You don't think he can disagree with people on a single point without having second thoughts about their overall intelligence? Is this what gaslighting is?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

My FIL is a retired engineer. MIL is a retired teacher. GFIL is a retired Air Force software engineer who designed and oversaw some of the systems in Cheyenne Mountain. Fox News has successfully melted their brains. These are smart people who have Fox on all day. They are full-in for Trump. They can not really explain their support, only that they are convinced the Democrats are awful, possibly evil.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

Dad came from humble circumstances (Grandpa worked for the local dairy most his life after WWII + family ended college aspirations, despite a scholarship). Dad's been a Republican all his life, but also a lawyer, so a more nuanced conservative. Step-mom is a retired orchestra teacher from Southern Utah. I'm pretty sure that's where their subscription to Epoch Times came from. They are not dumb people, but I suspect they are right-to-life single issue voters, leading to them willing to hold their nose to vote for whoever can get them there.
Brother has been conservative. Got advanced degrees in Economics. Then he moved to Texas. Now he's election-denying, Texas has the right view on everything full on crazy. He is not dumb, but I feel he is too intelligent to be acting this way.
I've been a conservative republican most of my life, even leaning libertarian. In college, I thought Austrian economics had a lot of good points, and read the Mises Institute and Lew Rockwell regularly. I went to law school, and was forced to really look at some of my views through the lens of what government power actually looks like, and what it should look like. I moderated my views somewhat. I am still a registered Republican, but I talk to other Republicans in person at local Republican events and I think THEY ARE INSANE.
Being intelligent is not mutually exclusive with being unreasonable in politics.
