  • Florida man, sensing increasing irrelevancy as others are benefitting from his sagging numbers, still leans hard into antivax position:

That settles it for me. I'm going in to get mine.

      • Assuming Trump dies of a heart attack, who is the bigger threat? DeSantis or Vivek?

        I think Vivek is worse.

I strongly agree, and don't like DeSantis at all.

A "friend" of mine posted on social media a video about how she really likes Vivek. What he says just really "resonates" with her. She had a strange connection with him because, like him, she is a first generation American, her parents are immigrants. And the position she liked was about limiting immigration or something. A position that really seems against her (and Vivek's) interest.

Vivek is becoming Trump Jr., and would be a similar disaster as a president. At least DeSantis has some executive experience.

We have a new family in the neighborhood. They put up a Vivek sign. Oy vey.

Political signs (and discussions) are almost non-existent in our neighborhood - which has been great.

I can't believe they found someone worse than DeSantis. But will people really vote for a demagogue that is a no-name ripoff of Trump?

Hmmm, maybe I'll have to give DeSantis more consideration.

Absolutely! We need someone who plays into unfounded fears people have about science and medicine!

Wait, you can give him more than you already do?

But before you do, you should check the excess COVID death stats in Florida. Performative anti-vax street cred can have real-life consequences.

                          • Strange to see the Florida Surgeon General (I clicked through to check his tweets) so active in partisan politics. Attacking "Big Pharma", "American people deserve the truth, but Biden admin only wants to control your behavior", passive-aggressively attacking Fauci, etc. He attacked the FDA for "interfering with the doctor-patient relationship" and called them the "cabal that hates freedom."

I'm an early adopter of the vax and am twice boosted. With that said, my views on the COVID vaccines, and the way COVID was handled in general, have evolved. I don't think the vaccines were quite as safe as originally thought and I think it's ok to have concerns. I still don't enjoy lunatic anti-vaxxers who think it was some sort of government plot.

Letting the snake (Trump) in the tent allowed for a whole host of conspiratorial thinking to infect discourse at large, from the relatively mild anti-vaxx sentiment of 'it's not as safe as the government is telling you', to believing that one's own research trumps the majority of scientific opinion. So when someone like DeSantis actively courts the worst of Trump's supporters by playing cute with anti-vaxx sentiment, he comes across as serious because he isn't an idiot. So not only does he capture the MAGA vote (but not in 2024!), but the borders of that group who are conspiracy-curious are drawn in. Witness this clown who DeSantis appointed to be the official medical spokesperson of his state:

Like everything else DeSantis does in his campaign, it is to win votes. It is reprehensible that he has played with Floridians' lives, all in a futile effort to outflank Trump on the right.
