Listened to him on Ezra Klein podcast. Very down home and impressive.
I don't think I'd heard of him until yesterday. Fun fact. After Klobuchar in 2020 and Phillips in 2024, Waltz is the third Minnesotan to (and first to successfully) seek a spot on this ticket. Interestingly enough, Klobuchar and Phillips received more delegates in their respective primaries than Harris.

      • I just spent about 10 minutes watching interviews of Waltz. I don't care much for his politics, but he's instantly and easily the most likable person on the ticket. Definitely going to stand out compared to Trump's bullshit, Harris' word salad, or Vance's pseudo-intellectual doomsdayism.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

No but the Democrat base is increasingly so.

I do think, sadly, that Shapiro's history of support of Israel (I believe he served in the IDF) was going to be a problem for Dems to get out the youth vote nationwide and the Arab-American vote in Michigan.

It's odd, since practically every pundit I've heard say that "in the end, the VP pick makes no difference," but I would have thought with Pennsylvania being so important to the Dems, that Shapiro would have been a shoe-in. I guess they figure that Walz' down-to-earth, folksy, friendly positivity will appeal to middle-of-the-road moderates across the Midwest. Another factor may be that Harris sees Walz as the best person to work with in the VP slot after she is elected.

                • Vance: Son, shut the hell up about Pikachu. (Gives strong "Hook" Peter Banning vibes, "Asha, get'em out of here, will you, I'm on the phone call of my life!")

Edit, in case I was overly dating myself with a reference to a highly underrated Spielberg-Robin Williams creation:

                    Yep, that kicks butt.

Per JD's "shut the hell up" reveal, did he really tell his kid that? If so, then what a dick. If not, then what a dick for lying in an attempt to make himself look like an everyday cool guy, but looking like a jerk.

                    Walz for the win.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, it was an internal thought only in the presence of his son. But he then stated it out loud on a national stage so that his son and his son's peers can easily find it in the future. If he didn't come off as a prick, it might have been endearing. Instead, he just comes across as even more of a prick.

Ha! I remember when a story of W's DUI almost killed his campaign back in 2000. Times have definitely changed.

                            • Why doesn't either party want to build a centrist coalition? Walz seems likeable enough but a bit of an own goal not to pick Shapiro. Maybe he ultimately didn't want to be a part of it. I really hate that neither party wants to be a sensible pro growth, no drama party.

                              • I was hoping for Shapiro. Too Jewish I guess. Bummer.

I am going to reserve judgement on Walz until Uncle Ted weighs in with a measured and thoughtful analysis.
