  • Meanwhile, in Utah (from the NYT article):

Governors Eric Holcomb of Indiana and Spencer Cox of Utah, both Republicans, recently called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, citing the value of foreign workers to their states. In March, Mr. Cox signed a law extending health coverage to all low-income children in his state, regardless of immigration status.

The bills would expose people to felony charges for sheltering, hiring and transporting undocumented immigrants; require hospitals to ask patients their immigration status and report to the state; invalidate out-of-state driver’s licenses issued to undocumented immigrants; and direct the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to provide assistance to federal authorities in enforcing the nation’s immigration laws.
      Gotta love the hypocrisy, though:

Under the proposed new bills, a person could be charged with a third-degree felony for knowingly transporting, concealing or harboring undocumented immigrants, punishable by up to five years in prison.
Last year, the Florida governor commissioned two private planes to fly unwitting Venezuelan migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, fueling outrage and prompting lawsuits.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

              • Florida man and state legislature wants to broaden death penalty cases for non-homicide crimes:

                https://slate.com/news-and-politics/...precedent.html

The Supreme Court of just 15 years ago clearly forbade what Florida is now trying to do. Florida legislators say “that’s the point.” Their goal is to provide the Supreme Court with the opportunity to review Kennedy, at which point both Gov. DeSantis and Florida legislators are confident the court, “in its current iteration,” would overturn Kennedy. Emphasizing the perceived ideological changes on the court since 2008, state Sen. Jonathan Martin (the Senate bill’s sponsor) argued that Justice Samuel Alito’s dissenting opinion in Kennedy—joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas—opened the door to this legislation. In light of Alito’s dissent and the current court’s “ideological framework,” Sen. Martin believes that the “new” court would “be in favor” of this legislation. Similarly, state Rep. Jessica Baker (the House bill’s sponsor) said she “welcome[s]” a constitutional challenge and is “hopeful” the court would “recede” from its “improperly decided” opinion in Kennedy.

Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Finally Florida is figuring out ways to kill more innocent Black men.

Embarrassing. Like they have 14-year olds coming up with these ideas. Yeah that won't have any far-reaching adverse consequences at all!

Oh it's not hypocrisy to the GOP. They see immigrants as cattle that can be moved around and manipulated for political purposes- nothing else.

                      • Tangentially related, but there are rumors that McConnell is likely retiring after the injuries he sustained. This would change the dynamics of the whole party. I know many of you despise McConnell, but he has been a bulwark against an overly trumpy GOP senate.* I worry who would get the votes in a new leadership role.

                        * you can stop wit the "he did everything Trump says so he wasn't a bulwark at all but an active participant in trumpism." He wasn't what I had hoped during the Trump admin but without him things would have been much worse.

After snooping around this rumor may have come from Ben Domenech. If so, I'm an idiot for even acknowledging it.
