It may be just me, but I believe that the shaft is 70% of the performance of the club. The head just contains the sweet spot, and has balance nuance can impart spin, inducing a draw or a fade. Most people fight a slice from an outside/in swing and a strong right palm facing the sky. That combination of swing has power, but induces a side spin like a frisbee that goes way right. The role of the shaft is to make sure that the head (sweet spot) is in play when the ball is struck. Too soft of a shaft (don't giggle 71) makes the head come through too fast through the hands, and out of square to the left. A shaft that is too stiff lags behind the hands, and opens the face inducing side spin slicing the ball. Like Goldilocks, you want to find a shaft that is just right.Originally posted by Drunk Tank View PostHow is the Callaway? Have you hit it? I just switched back to my Ping G5 driver with the Aldila NV shaft and my average drive distance now is between 245-270, with the occasional 300 yd crush. I have a Adams 9032LS with the voodoo shaft. I hit it well, but it has a 10.5 deg loft and I hit it too high I think. I am straighter with the Ping as well.
I would really like to be fit for a driver to see what shaft/lie angle combo works best for me.
For years I battled going too far left with my shots. Not a draw, just a straight shot that would be more prone to left than the middle. So... I got fitted and found that a 1* open face allow me to swing for power more freely without the constant mind battle that inhibited my swing. With a Voodoo shaft, I think I could hit any head with it and ultimately be OK, I like the Callaway FT Tour and the FT 9 Tour because of the 1* open face. I was gonna buy the FTiz from the German guy in Hong Kong, but the only come in a 1/2* closed, which is 1.5*'s from where I want to be - so I am back at the FT 9 Tour.
My biggest problem is Taxes. My wife decided to help me this year, and it has cost me a few grand that I didn't anticipate. Even though I can afford what I want (in my mind at least) my wife maintains constant vigilance on any financial expenditures that don't benefit her directly, so this club is going to have to be bought black opps. I'm going to have launder my golf money.
So the answer to your question is - First, find the shaft that matches your swing speed - Second figure out the face angle and loft - Third the Brand of the Head that instills confidence.Last edited by clackamascoug; 04-19-2010, 09:19 AM.

I played Forest Hills a bunch when I was going to school at Pacific. A very picturesque course. I broke my original Big Bertha driver on #9, the shaft snapped on a drive.Originally posted by clackamascoug View PostMy technical home course is Forest Hills Golf Club. That's where I play Saturday golf with the mens club. The course I play the most is called Stone Creek, in Oregon City. It's a Peter Jacobson course thats about ten years old. Its south of Oregon City and east of Canby by about 6 miles.
I'm am turning into a headcase on the course. I played with the local gangsome on Friday, the team leader shot an easy 69 (he only had to make one par save from >6 feet). I started out +2 after 8 holes then somehow carded an 85; two doubles and a triple on the back will do that. Everything I was doing correct with my driver on Thursday, I was doing wrong on Friday. I was terrible off the tee all day long.Last edited by Art Vandelay; 04-19-2010, 09:59 AM.

Is it possible that with playing so much lately that your swing is improving, and swing speed is improving, and your out of sync now with your driver?Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostEverything I was doing correct with my driver on Thursday, I was doing wrong on Friday. A lot of people play good after a lay off because they play less aggressive, and the are syncing well. After a couple of rounds they swing more aggressive messing up the timing of their equipment.
Probably not you... but just a trend to watch for.

I played like shit yesterday. Seriously....it may be the liquor talking but I think I may be done with Sunday golf. (Unless out of town and on vacation.)
I have had a case of the <redacted> since I got my new clubs. I am going to have to figure something out because I am tired of this. My SW doesn't give me a problem, but 7-PW I <redacted> everything to the left. Not huge, but when you are 115 from the green and you consistently land 15 yards left of the green, pin level, it can drive you to kill.
Only bright spot was < 2 putt average again.
5 rounds in a row in the 90's, then back to a 101. Maybe I do just suck.Last edited by The_Tick; 04-19-2010, 08:25 PM.

I feel you, I shot an 89 at Thanksgiving Pointe today and the only reason I was even that low was because I drained 3 putts of at least 50 feet. Including a 70 foot putt that we stepped off to see how far it was. Uphill from the fringe on hole 4 (the downhill par3).Originally posted by The_Tick View Posthttp://clubsg.skygolf.com/golfers/score.php?id=1164762

Also some douche bag behind us hit me with his drive right in the shoulder. I about came uncorked and hit his ball two fairways over. I was pissed I was only about 260 from him when he teed off. 350 yard par 4, I am still in the fairway and dude is teeing off.*Banned*

I feel like I generally have my temper under good control, however one thing that makes me lose it is someone hitting into you. Unless you are on a hole where you can't see the landing or something there is no reason for it to ever happen. If one is in that big of hurry to golf he is probably there at the wrong time and needs to go back on a Tuesday morning or something.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostAlso some douche bag behind us hit me with his drive right in the shoulder. It depends. If there is a group that is playing really slow (all 4 guys looking for balls, taking alternate shots but not getting ready to hit their own, etc) and they won't let us play through, I'll tee it up.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI feel like I generally have my temper under good control, however one thing that makes me lose it is someone hitting into you. I have sent a few warning shots myself don't get me wrong. But we had a group ahead of that we were waiting for, also Thanksgiving Point plays notoriously slow expect minimum 4 1/2 hours per round if not longer. Its a hard course the slope from the whites is 135 which is harder than 95% of the courses in the state. We were playing yellows (T-pointe goes red, white, blue, yellow, black) from the yellows/golf it is 140.Originally posted by Surfah View PostIt depends. Also the group ahead of us was actually the Finau brothers. We never really caught them except for on one or two holes but man they bomb the hell out of the ball. It was unreal.*Banned*

Yeah when you're waiting for someone else there isn't much you can do to speed up play. I think it's hilarious when someone asks to play through and you're waiting on a group, or two, or three.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostI have sent a few warning shots myself don't get me wrong. I dont like being hit into, and I try not to hit into anyone.
We got hit into friday. Dude hit just left of the green from 150 out while we were still putting. I was pretty pissed.
Then Sunday, the group behind us was on the green on a short par 4, and a guy in the group behind them lands the green with his tee shot, They werent happy. I wanted to shake the guys hand for an outstanding drive.

Last summer my 18 year old son (6'5" 320 of pure muscle) hit a drive that flew 330 in the air and cold cocked a guy in the head. Right on the crown. He went down like a sack of potato's. We jumped into our carts and rushed down to help the guy. His playing partner was there and the guy was knocked out stone cold. We offered to call an ambulance, but the guy woke up and said he was all right, and that he wanted to finish his round, as he was playing his best round in years.
My son was so distraught he quit and just tagged along. To our surprise the guy kept going, with a bump the size of two golf balls on top. We all finished, and at the end the guy started flexing saying he wanted our personal info because in intended to sue. I told him my son is 18 - has no insurance - no assets - and that when you step onto a golf course, you assume liability for being in a place where objects are flying in the air. It was an accident, there was no intention of hitting you, we're sorry that it happened but that's the end of it. And it was.
