  • I have been playing really well as of late. A few rounds ago I broke my 9 hole best record and had a 39. It was from the white tee's but still a 39. Friday I tied my 18 hole best and shot an 83. I had 10 pars and a birdie. I was +6 on two par 3's and that kept me from breaking 80 for the first time.

Today I Played in the men's club event. 2 man best ball (gross and net). My index is 17.9 but my course handicap is a 20, so I get pops on every hole and double pops on the 2 hardest holes. I have been playing great as of late and coming off of a personal best 83 Friday, I felt good going in to today's tournament. My normal playing partner (Tick) didn't play and did the right thing and went to church instead. I played great!

I shot an 84. The round could have been better as my chipping was horrible. But I was really consistent and never really had a blow up hole like I normally do. This was the first time in a long time I had no doubles on the back 9. We shot a net 60 which was good enough for first place. I also got a skin on the #1 handicap hole. I think I have figured out something in my game. I am striking my irons really well and I am keeping myself out of trouble off the tee box. My putter has been pretty hot too. I hope it can last as my index is going to be dropping on the first.

Hopefully the trend of lower scores continues.

      • I played with Junkie and wasn't overly disappointed. I've played literally twice in 12 months with the most recent time being in September.

In pretty tough conditions I was able to par 6 holes, bogey 8, and implode on 4.

Had a couple of pretty amazing shots, I hit a 5 iron 230 into the wind that was sweet as could be, and bombed a drive 280 into the wind that was sick.

Also almost killed CJ with an errant shot right into his cart.

        • Morning round with FiL for his 65th bday, Diamond Woods. 47-44. This should have been a low 80s round, I lipped out 8+ putts, and lost 2 balls on 1 hole. All easy fixes.

Night round with Nick Aliotti, Eugene CC. 50-46. Eugene is par 35-37, with the back being much longer than the front. I just wasnt concentrating at all on the front, too busy talking Ducks and kids. Played bogey golf on the back.

            • One of my former students, a 44 y/o ex-military guy, asked me to go golfing with him today. Our tee time was 7:40AM, and it was perfect outside. $20 for 18 holes with a cart. By 9AM, it was in the upper 80's with 70% humidity and no clouds. On the par-37 front nine, I shot a 63. We shot hole #10, around 10AM, but by that time the heat and my Achilles made it so I had to pack it in. My Achilles is agonizing me right now.

This was the first time I've been golfing since I played Sun River in St. George in 2004. It felt good to get out there again. My first two holes were a combined 22, but after that I shot 41 over the last seven. I've golfed maybe 20 times in my life, but I enjoy it. I'm using my wife's grandfather's Wilson clubs from the 1970's too, so I imagine that newer clubs might help me a little. These clubs were in my back stairwell during Katrina, and were completely submerged. Rather than throw them away, I scrubbed them all and saved them.

We're planning on going again in August once I get back from driving out to Utah.

63 is the max I could possibly shoot for 9 holes because I always pick up when I am putting for a triple. It is good even if I am hitting for the triple from 200 yards out. You know "while we're young"!!!

Glad you got out and was having some fun.

Double par is my limit. I've had a lot of 6's, 8's, and 10's.

I used to play with some old Hogan clubs. I got a little better immediately when I switched to some newer, low-end clubs a couple years back, but I've only made it out golfing a couple times the last few years.

Wilson clubs from the 70's, even if they aren't hurricane proven, will cost you 20 strokes in 9 holes. So, on the bright side if you had decent clubs, you'd be in the 40's.

                    • Waup, If you ever get to the point where you think you'd golf a few times a year and need equipment, I'd be happy to build you a set of clubs. Could probably get you into a set of Woods, Irons, wedges, and a putter for less than $300. We'd just buy the individual components, and I'd assemble them in my garage for ya. I owe you a favor.

My dream set back in high school was a set of Wilson Staffs. I found a set on EBay for only $100 and I may get them just to have around. The more I think about it I may go and look for some real woods and do some retro golf on the little 9 hole course I grew up on. Get me some old balata balls and I would be set. Thanks Clack I think I'm going to do this.

Not sure when you were in High School,l but in the 70's I played with a set of Haig Ultra's. I think the Haig had to do with Walter Hagan. Anyway they were blades and that was just before cavity backs came around.

I kept them and they might be an antigue item now, except I have let them rust as I do everything.

What brought this up is Wilson made them.

I loved those old Haig Ultras also. They had the twisted shaft at the bottom and those clubs were beautiful. The sweet spot was about the size of a pinhead but they were a sweet set. I played with some Powerbilt clubs. The woods had the cooper piece on the back so it looked like their was more weight behind the ball.

I played with the Powerbilt's too. If I remember right they had a color I really like. Were they kind of reddish, not red, but reddish.

                              • I did a bit on my club genealogy a few years ago. My first set of Northwestern Clubs might have been the biggest rip off in history. My friend played with his Dad's Kenneth Smith clubs, and they felt like pure heaven to me. As a 16 year old with no golf mentor, I was stuck playing with marginal clubs until after my mission and my first set of Pings.

RC.. it would be kind of fun to try out old clubs again. Wuap's having a good time and doesn't even know it.
