An Assistant Professor (untenured) at UofU makes around $117k. I suspect the vast majority of 1st year law grads make substantially less than $120k, although I don't doubt there are firms that pay that.Originally posted by old_gregg View Postfor reference, a first year graduate from law school in salt lake makes $120k.

A buddy of mine decided to go to law school several years after graduating and working as an engineer. His first job after law school was for a patent law firm in Salt Lake City. He started at $150K. But after a few months, he decided that he hated going to work and the money wasn't worth it. So he went back to his old engineering job and has been very happy.Originally posted by LVAllen View PostAn Assistant Professor (untenured) at UofU makes around $117k. Patent lawyers can pretty much write their ticket, as can the top 20 of so from a given law school. It's the folks that graduated 50-131 in a class of 160 where the salary takes a steep downward trend.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostA buddy of mine decided to go to law school several years after graduating and working as an engineer. sure, but the church isn't paying average scrubs. $120k is not a lot of money.Originally posted by LVAllen View PostAn Assistant Professor (untenured) at UofU makes around $117k. I'm willing to bet that most Mos don't know GAs get a six-digit base salary. I also know I would never take the job for that kind of salary. I'm not sure what you'd have to pay me to take that job.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

It's easy for this fine group of lawyers, doctors, engineers, fish biologists, and welders to scoff at $120k. I can understand why a family that lives off of $50k per year and pays tithing on gross income may be put off by the fact that a GA makes six figures and gets a free Avalon, especially if they were told that GAs are given a living allowance (which implies compensation/reimbursement of necessary living expenses).Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

I'm fairly confident most GAs would "take the job" even if there was no living allowance/salary/stipend.Originally posted by All-American View PostI'm willing to bet that most Mos don't know GAs get a six-digit base salary. According to the internet, 120K/year is somewhere between the 80th and 90th percentile of US salaries. Yeah, this highly biased group should consider what the majority of people would consider is 'a lot of money'.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostIt's easy for this fine group of lawyers, doctors, engineers, fish biologists, and welders to scoff at $120k. I don't think anyone's scoffing at $120K. The amount is noteworthy primarily as a rebuttal to the angry ex-mos who post nonsense about the top GAs pulling in a half mill or more. Recent COLAs probably push the current number to over $130K which enables them to live comfortably, but not lavishly, and certainly below the level they'd earn if they worked as many hours in the private sector as they do now.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostIt's easy for this fine group of lawyers, doctors, engineers, fish biologists, and welders to scoff at $120k. Those who pay on the gross probably have sufficient faith not to be put off by whatever the brethren are pulling down. If not, they are of all men most miserable.

At any rate, I think any angst could be avoided by (a) being more transparent, and (b) quit thumping our chests about not having a paid ministry.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

I haven't seen a whole lot of chest thumping lately, but how would you describe it when all ministry but less than 200 top full-time administrators are unpaid?Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostThat feels like a copout to me.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
