Let's keep in mind that they also get a Toyota Avalon on top of that living allowance

You could probably sustain life on $15-20K per year. Or less.Originally posted by Solon View PostI hadn't really thought of a specific number, but it doesn't really matter to me.
But the phrase "Living Allowance" suggests (to me) that it's just enough to sustain life.
Which is why I guffawed.

I don't if it would be miserable. It would just take discipline. Www.mrmoneymustache.comOriginally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYou could probably sustain life on $15-20K per year. Or less.

The obsession with retiring young is funny to me. "Retire" at age 40 or 50 and do what?
I'm a cheap SOB who likes to save but some of those articles are insane.
Yeah by all means don't own a car or have kids or buy a home or any of those things that deplete your resources so that you can just save and retire at 35.

Completely agree. Live like a hermit so that I can retire at 30 and then sit around all day with nothing do, while continuing to live like a hermit? Lol. Pass.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostThat site cracks me up. I remember reading most of the articles on it a few years ago.

There are many things that would suck about being a GA but all that travel and weekend work? That would really bite and there is no question that deserves a decent "living allowance."
There really isn't a "market value" for the job though of course because they could get people to do it for free. That number seems totally reasonable of course but if you polled older LDS people a lot of them would be shocked and dismayed that the GAs get 6 figures -- Solon is right on about that.
A great way to save a ton of money would be to give women the Priesthood -- think of all the 50+ women who would do the work for free or at most 2/3 of what the men make! I'm going to make that suggestion to Church HQ next time they ask for my advice.

Yup the better advice I would give is to settle into sustainable habits regarding work and spending that you can keep up for decades and enjoy your life both at work and outside of work. Don't spend too much, don't work too much, don't fall into a consumer mentality. The ideas are right but those guys are extremists who hate their jobs I guess.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostCompletely agree. You realize this is Lebowski (who we know is loaded) and CardiaCoug (hello, heart doctor!!)? These guys make bank so living on a measly $120K would stretch them. Many GA's do not live in Salt Lake. They serve in area presidencies all over the world and are working 80 hour plus weeks. It's not an easy job. As someone who is fairly familiar with expat salaries, the Church is getting a bargain.
