They didn't even have purse or scrip

I wonder if you guys would feel differently about payment to the the Apostles in olden times since 100% of the clergy were getting loaves and fishes.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Perfect into to your podcast! You could do an entire series on this topic.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI've got a feeling that the early apostles would be surprised, or maybe even miffed, at today's apostles making $120k/year.
Brigham Young would consider them wankers. When he died his estate was worth $75K. I will let you adjust that to today's dollars."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I do think there's a semi-valid complaint with GAs getting paid, even if it's a modest living allowance (I'll not dive into the discussion over whether or not $120K is modest). The early apostles were required to travel and work without purse or scrip. It stands to reason that if we are the embodiment of that early church, then we should look to our leaders in similar capacity to travel similarly...which they kind of do given that visiting GAs usually stay at local leaders homes and are fed by local families. It's also probably correct that "without purse or scrip" is likely a church policy and not doctrine, so it's easily changed by a formal committee without direct revelation. But whatever. I don't care if they make $0 or $120K or if they are paid with tithings, business earnings, or gambling winnings (or better yet, tithing received by members that paid on gambling winnings).
My biggest issue in this regard, and this spills over into the CCC and various other aspects of Mormonism, is the general policy that appearances matter more than most things. I don't care that the church built a $1 billion or $3 billion (or whatever it was) mall in SLC. I do care that the reason they built it was because they wanted to keep downtown beautiful (or whatever exact term GBH used when it was announced). A church should invest its money in projects or stocks or savings or whatever...but I don't a church should view an upscale shopping mall as beautiful. There's an inherent prosperity doctrine contained in the rationale for building the CCC and that worries me.
It also worries me that we need to give a living allowance to GAs. Why not take the mission president approach and have offices/apartments already setup for them? Give them a very small allowance for groceries and an unlimited gas card and if they want to travel or do something in July, they can use retirement or savings to do it. It does seem weird they are just handed $120K every year. It seems like more and more the church loses faith in its members to support both teh chruch (putting lots of money into long term investments) and the GAs (giving them $120K/year) all while asking typical members to exercise more and more faith. What kind of apostle can't travel without purse or scrip? One that lacks faith (I'm not saying the current apostles don't have faith, just that the living allowance retards them in that area)."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Yeah, it's just a lack of faith. Couldn't possibly be any other reason.Originally posted by Moliere View PostHey now, I'm an accountant, not a finance guy.

Not following the logic here. If they went without purse or scrip and sent out announcement when they traveled asking for members to comp them, you think that would require faith to step on an airplane wondering they might not get fed when they land?Originally posted by Moliere View PostWhat kind of apostle can't travel without purse or scrip? It's a funny argument, isn't it?Originally posted by jay santos View PostNot following the logic here. Eddie Jones is probably unaware that this is what the apostles used to do not many years ago. I remember as a kid when apostles/GAs would come to stake conference that they would always stay in members' homes and be fed by the members. People would fight (figuratively!) for the opportunity to host them. Can you imagine a steady diet of casseroles?

I can understand the "they're greedy or selfish" argument (though I don't agree with it--it's just not enough money to be noteworthy). But I don't understand this "lack of faith" argument at all.
