Ms. Kelly, 33, is among the largest wave of Mormons to face excommunication since 1993, when the church disciplined half a dozen dissident intellectuals known as the “September Six.”

John P. Dehlin, the founder of Mormon Stories, a website for those questioning their faith, received notice of his excommunication hearing the day before Ms. Kelly.
Two people is a "wave"? And the largest since 1993? Heh.

Why are these people referred to as "intellectuals". They may have differing opinions from church leaders and that is certainly their right, but what I have heard and read from them wouldn't have me stand back and think, those folks are quite intellectual.

It is due to the fact that these people appear to outsiders to be excommunicated for expressing democratic ideals within a theocracy. You know they are pointing to the symbolic meaning of excommunicating peaceful leaders of "movements" within the LDS community. Given how few defined segments in Mormonism of which the outside world becomes aware the excommunication of two leaders appears to be significant.

That's code for non-believers who have articulated their non-belief. I think it's a bit grandiose, too, but I guess they can call themselves Rumplestiltzkin for all I care.

I don't know if they have labeled themselves as such, it was the NY Times. I think the message from the Times is these are the people who are intelligent as opposed to those who make decisions on emotion or tradition.

I think that's sympathetic labeling in this case. Journalists like emotional angles and love to prop up people who they can paint as fighting the man.

                    Very interesting.

Wasn't D. Michael Quinn accused of apostasy but actually excommunicated for something else as well? It was something like "conduct unbecoming a member". Maybe that is a nice way to say he was actually excommunicated for being gay.

So maybe "conduct contrary to the laws and order of the church" is a nice way of saying that Kate Kelly was excommunicated for being gay.As Romney once said equal rights for women (ERA) is just a home for "moral perverts" such as the "lesbians and the homosexuals". It is just a matter of time before Kate Kelly comes out of the closet.

Or maybe it's her posture on the missionary position that's to blame.

I love the Abinadi in shackles splash page. Is that how they view themselves in their "disciplinary hearings?"

I suppose that is interesting, in the same sort of way that stupid people are interesting.

About as interesting as watching the carnage of a train wreck.

Perhaps people who "get this" are actually so stupid they think it is brilliant.
