The thread is moving fast (you're welcome D-Nut), and I missed your contemporary link to a study demonstrating that pornography is an indicator for recidivist behavior in child molesters... but come on. That isn't what anyone here is talking about.

The fact is that this research on a topic that the entire world is deeply interested in has basically zero google presence in any popular media. Even Jean Kilbourne of "Killing us softly" fame has a bloody wikipedia article.

        Well done, my friend.

Research concerning the effects of pornography is inconclusive. Some studies support the contention that the viewing of pornographic material may increase rates of sexual crimes, while others have shown no effects, or a decrease in the rates of such crimes. Moreover, all these studies focus on various correlations, but correlation does not imply causation.

Babs, I notice it doesn't have one of those "this article is disputed" flags. You may want to be the first to do it.

Nine times IN the computer labs? I remember when I got my internet from BYU, I would catch these screens that would tell me that the site I was trying to visit was deemed pornographic, and that continuing to try to visit it could cause academic trouble. I would get this screen at home and in the computer labs (I wasn't looking for porn at BYU, but some sites that were NOT pornographic still had this warning block).
I am on record for advocating the abolishment/major overhaul of the honor code. But you simply cannot tolerate porn access from computer labs at school or work, no matter the organization. I was actually quite impressed at how far they went to work with this guy.

Yes, they have filters, but he would sit in the labs and hammer away trying to find unfiltered URLs. Bumping up against the filter accidentally is no big deal and it happens all the time, but repeated and blatant attempts to circumvent are investigated. Sad to see an otherwise bright guy engage in such self-destructive behavior.

You never did post the science about your claims about men and women's "Primary drive." Is there really scientific research supporting the claim that "women's primary drive is... emotional support?"

                    • Here is something that kind of supports Babs' thesis.

In a study of 20 couples where only the male used pornography, and of about 400 couples all together:
In 15% of the couples, both had used pornography; in 3% of the couples, only the female partner had used pornography; and, in 5% of the couples, only the male partner had used pornography for this purpose. Based on the results of a discriminant function analysis, it is suggested that couples where one or both used pornography had a more permissive erotic climate compared to the couples who did not use pornography. In couples where only one partner used pornography, we found more problems related to arousal (male) and negative (female) self-perception. These findings could be of importance for clinicians who work with couples
                      .

This came up on a google search for "effects of pornography on couples' sexual health"

                      (see Babs, I'm trying!)

You need to go back to Donuthole's starter to see what this thread is about. I keep trying to return it to topic.

                          • Women can be sexist, too.

When used regularly, it trains the body and mind to physiologically respond to artificial reproductions of sex, rather than the real thing. Pavlov ring a bell?

It creates sexual dysfunction in men, by exposing them to more and more extreme types of sex, until typical sex with a real partner is not enough to inspire interest.

It puts men at risk of committing date rape, as they learn from porn that forced sex is acceptable and erotic.
Babs... in essence I agree with these ideas. However... your feelings are decidedly anti-male. Three of your four statements are accusatory towards men when the truth is that pornography is used widely by women as well as men. And... do I really have to place a source here to prove this? Proving every statement becomes tedious and slows down constructive conversation. Anyone who wants to prove that women don't use porn can feel free to go looking for a triple-blind study... sheesh! Frankly, I spend my life surrounded by professors and (as much as I love intelligent people) I'm sick of the pride of academia! (Oh, that was off topic... sorry... .) Of course we want to make sure our statements are founded in research and reality, but let's avoid going overboard .

I'd revise your anti-male statements to read:

Pornography CAN create a disconnect between the user and his or her partner.

Pornography CAN create sexual dysfunction, by exposing people to more and more extreme types of sex, until typical sex with a real partner is not enough to inspire interest.

Pornography CAN put users at risk of committing rape, as they learn from porn that forced sex is acceptable and erotic.

**** Of course these are things that CAN happen -- not things that necessarily happen. ****

Is it possible to discuss the negative affects of porn without being sexist? And don't go getting an idea that I'm not both a woman and a feminist just because I defend men!!

Funny because I was just realizing she(?) had 13 posts on pornography and one in a thread on a teacher sex abuse case and was going to suggest she start branching out while people were still formulating opinions. Guess I was alone on that thought.
