I don't like the idea of her working in this area in any capacity. However, the Women's Conference is hosted at BYU but it is not conducted by BYU. It is organized and managed by an external board (my wife was on the board at one time). BYU does not micromanage the conference.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostIt's entirely possible that the EE was pulled by his bishop, leading to his ejection from the school--the article doesn't make that point clear. However, if she went to the HCO in 2009, and told them what was going on, I think it's embarrassing and improper to have her then speak in 2010 at Women's Conference on campus about porn addiction. What she did, any way you look at it, was unethical and improper. Such people should not be allowed to speak to LGM's of a religious nature."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? You can't control perception and it is nice to have people on here who can add information to take perception and change it to fact.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI don't like the idea of her working in this area in any capacity. On the whole, BYU I believe is far less "orthodox or fundamentalist" that the perception. However, it seems to me that BYU does tolerate or provide an atmoshpere where those who are "orthodox or fundamentalist" can express their views and go unchallenged.
CB, I really don't like ragging on them too much because they provide a lot of fun for a lot of people, is an example of this. The rules there let the more "conservative" folks go unchallenged.

I wish the whole Lifestar racket would fall apart because of this. If a Bishop feels someone needs counseling they should tell him (or her -- rowrr!) to specifically avoid Lifestar.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

True. I admit, though, that I have a hard time viewing the Y campus as a mere rent-a-building common carrier of information that is directly related to its parent organization's mission. Here again an issue with having a GA President. I can't imagine there being an annual conference on any campus I've been on without a voting faculty/staff advisor.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI don't like the idea of her working in this area in any capacity. I looked at the article again. The first line says she discussed the patient with LDS Church Leaders and BYU.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostDo we know that the HC office was involved? Or did he just fail to get his ecclesiastical endorsement?
The article then says she talked about "John Doe" to the Honor Code Office at BYU. Interesting. I don't know anything about the science, but I do know that what he says about novelty and voyeurism ring true to me.Originally posted by jay santos View Post
All you porn addicts, what do you think of this? I don't know if any of this stuff is pseudo science, but it's interesting. If the church wants to fight porn, I'd like to see it get behind this kind of stuff, not beat everyone over the head with morality."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. Thanks for thinking of me. That was really interesting, and seems to kind of go along with some of the things I heard Elder Cook mention 6 months ago. He said that they had some experts talking about similar things to the leaders of the church. That porn changes us physiologically and such. I find it interesting that through stopping, we can change back, though it does take a long time. They should just preach that looking at porn will give you ED. Scare them straight.Originally posted by jay santos View Post

I would love to show that to the men at church, though I am afraid that the banana picture is too suggestive.

Since I cut porn out my life I am routinely in the middle of the fairway at about 300 yards! Scared straight and long!Originally posted by BigPiney View PostThanks for thinking of me. I don't know the science at all, but it seems intuitive to me that gratifying the instinct, visually and otherwise, that is the sole purpose of the existence of any species from a biological stand may affect the brain. I wonder whether images like that are sort of like sugar. Having a sweet tooth is an adaptation our ancestors gained because sugar was virtually never available. Now that we can eat it all day long every day it causes problems.
Might that be the same thing with sexual images? Too much of a good thing that is available in quantities it never was before? That is my first thought. My second thought is, how do I know that my species isn't adapted (at least the males) to circumstances where access to sexual images (nude or semi-nude females) and the number of sexual partners and experiences where much higher than they are now?
That to me raises the additional question of whether we might now have a biological adaptation that is in tension with a cultural adaptation (monogamy).
I wonder what woot knows about this.

I thought Wilson's presentation was interesting. I can't comment on the science (it appears logical enough) but I wish that he would have avoided the misogynistic tone (score more babes, chick magnet etc.) that pervaded his discussion. A little too much like locker room talk, which doesn't fit the context, IMO.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia

Interesting talk. First time I have heard a speaker discuss the Coolidge Effect since I was in a Psychology of Sexuality class back in college. You know, this explains polygamists being able to satisfy ten women pretty regularly -- each time you are with another woman, even after a recent climax, you will get turned on again as opposed to women who can immediately get turned on right after climax. Novelty reduces refractory time to almost a matter of a few minutes.
That being said, I do recognize that a man might get a change in brain physiology after watching porn. You see, his dopamine levels as well as testosterone will skyrocket. A woman's will as well. This may explain research that shows that women who watch porn have a better self image than women who do not. In fact, what I would like to see is a research study on the fertility potential of a man who watches porn occasionally (in moderation) to a man who never watches porn. My guess is that with his higher testosterone level he would have a better chance of impregnating a woman and probably with healthier sperm since he is flushing the system more often. Would that work with women? I would bet that women who watch porn are more likely to enjoy sex and be more fertile.
That being said of course there is a moral aspect coupled with the danger a person could replace true relationships with porn -- a rather pitiful substitute.
