  • I also hope he doesn’t get the death penalty. First of all, because I am ethically opposed to the death penalty. But I also love the idea of him sitting in jail the rest of his life contemplating the horrible things he’s done.

      • Yup. Not what I wanted - I bet he is a martyr in his own mind.

Well, the next guy up for execution in Idaho has been on death row for over 30 years so it will be interesting we'll see how long Chad lasts.

$20 says he waives all the appeals he's allowed to waive and expedites the sentence so he's dead within 10 years. With inflation over the next decade we better make it $30 10 years from now. Any want my action?

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

The same number of psychos that would have attempted something like that without the movie.

                    • This clip brought back a weird memory for me. Towards the end of my mission in Belgium I was dragging a new missionary along the doors late in the day to prove some meaningless point about working hard. Tracting was all we did and in spite of it being nearly 100% ineffective, the culture was that good missionaries banged their heads against this wall and bad ones didn't. I was hoping to give him one of those "last door of the day" experiences. I should let you know that it was not unusual to tract 8-10 hours and not get let in once. It was quite normal to do those hours and be let in 1-3 times. Of those, one or two a week were "normal" people, the others demonstrating they were clearly "off" within minutes of letting us in.

So on this particular day a normal seeming gentleman lets us in and I'm thinking it's all coming together and I'm proving to this kid that hard work pays off. The guy chats us up a bit then says "I have a hobby where I videotape people that I find interesting." Of course I'm in what we called BRT mode which I know you old heads know. So I say "cool, that sounds like fun." He says, "I'd really like to film you guys. Would that be ok?" This immediately sets off my spidey senses as weird but I think it might make sense to some of you that I didn't want to "lose this sale" so I said "I guess so, but I'm not sure why we would interest anyone." He said "oh I think a couple of Americans would be very interesting." Then he says "I'm going to get you guys a drink and then get my equipment together."

My comp can't understand a word of Dutch yet so when this guy leaves the room I say "whatever he brings, don't drink it." Comp says "why not?" I said, "because something is weird here, he wants to film us." "Film us doing what?" "I guess just giving the discussion?" "That feels weird to me, man." "Yeah me too but maybe we're overreacting."

Drinks come out and he doesn't have one for himself, just us. He also didn't pour in front of us. He excuses himself to go get his equipment. I turn to my comp and say "I really wanted this to be a cool experience for you but I think we should bail before he comes back." Comp was more than happy to comply. I've often wondered what that dude thought when he came back in and we were gone.

Funny thing is what I was most worried about back then was the video being used to somehow mock the church. The serial killer angle didn't really occur to me until I'd had time to think about how truly weird the request was. We were overconfident at that age and because there were two of us we never felt he could physically have hurt us unless we were somehow impaired. A few years after I got home I was watching Pulp Fiction and there was that scene were the pawn shop guy calls Zed and says "come over, spider's caught a couple of flies" and there was an aha moment like "what if he had other people on the way?" I'm sure it was just some dorky Belgian who wanted to use his new camera but the longer I thought about it, the more I realized getting out of there was the smart thing to do.

And the whole chain of his descendants won’t hear the gospel and will end up in the telestial kingdom.
