The printer's manuscript is the closest thing the church has to a 'divine' relic. It's got to be pretty faith-promoting, and I'm sure it will be a hit at the church museum. So I can totally see why the church would spend a lot to get it.

35 million is a lot though...
You asked SB not me, but for me yes. I scoffed at the feigned outrage over 70s making $120k, they are out working for the cause. What value is this? That seems like a lot of money that could've done dramatic good in various places around the world, or at least bought every missionary companionship a car. If they were able to talk private donors into this, why didn't they talk them into something of worth to the world? I have a hard time imagining Jesus giving Joseph Smith a dap after the church secured this. Feels like it would be more of a face palm.

I'm still all in. I get people getting caught up in collectibles and losing sight of reality, I own about 300 pairs of Nikes (including many duplicate pairs). We all make bad decisions with money when there is an emotional connection sometimes.

        Poor people don't do that.

Excellent point. With a credit card.

Less than $1000 each. Those are going to be pretty rough cars. Probably best that way. I remember how I used to drive our mission cars.

They were probably looking down the barrel of bankruptcy. They also probably have enough relics to have the LDS Church keep them on life support until they have to give up the ultimate relic-- that specific piece of real estate that we're licking our chops to get.

Why in the world would you do that? Just imagine if you'd invested all of that in Bitcoin.

I hear you. Just today, I had a conversation with my daughter. She is working minimum wage, yet she wants to get a tattoo AND save money for Europe.

Some of our children who don't have jobs want iPhone Xs. Good luck with that.

If it's the real estate in Kirtland, then yes eventually the RLDS/CoC might sell that. But the RLDS/CoC don't own the specific real estate needed in Missouri. The Church of Christ Temple Lot owns the key Missiouri real estate.

The RLDS sued the Hendrickites back in 1891 to try and get the temple lot, but they lost.

Ahh, the "they could have done a lot of good with that money" argument. This particular argument is definitely a classic:

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

Cool, the "oh the _____ argument" argument. Even more of a classic.

Edit: wait, aren't you the shut down the Halloween party for the ward guy? Literal eye roll. So, you not only want to say what actions are appropriate for yourself and your family, but want to dictate what is right for the entire church? I didn't call out any leader, I didn't say anything negative about the church. I said I felt like any other use of $35 MILLION dollars, (keeping it, investing in any type of humanitarian activity, giving each church member $2.20, seriously any other activity with the money) is a better than spending it on old paper. We all make decisions that aren't great, I actually think that's kind of the whole point of this silly life, I make them, you do and the dude that pulled the trigger on this did. I guess that could be my argument, but instead, in the immortal words of the great SU "I'm going to leave you thinking you eviscerated me. gfys

                              • Yeah, I'm with HuskyNorthwest on this one. It's hard to justify a church paying $35 million bucks for a stack of paper.
