Sorry for failing you Sooner. Had I had any idea that Cliven had so much potential, I would have definitely honored the man with his own thread.
I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

Turns out Clivan's remarks, while certainly clumsy, weren't as bad as originally thought. The guy reminds me a lot of some of my relatives when they were senior citizens.

        Jeers to the NYT.

Exactly. I went from supporting the guy, to supporting his cause, to thinking he is an ignorant jackass. Now I am to, he is an old man and perhaps ignorant of how to express himself in a politically correct manner.

For purposes of the progressives on the board though, I still think he could turn out to be an ignorant, racist, jackass so please don't call me names.

              Huh?

So he said some conciliatory things to Mexicans and other minorities. How does that even change the ugly racism in this quote (captured on video)?:

"They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy?"
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

Look I'm not giving the guy a pass. He certainly shouldn't be a spokesperson for the civil right movement. However, when you read the whole thing he's making a clumsy attempt at a comparison between the era of slavery and the era of government welfare. I doubt the guy's really as racist as many want to paint him.

Why do you doubt that? He's an old white guy who has lived and worked his entire life on a ranch in small town Nevada. Wouldn't 90% of guys like him be racist? Certainly doesn't make it okay, but I don't get why some people are trying to apologize for him and find reasons why he might not be racist. He wouldn't even have to open his mouth and just playing the odds, I'd say the dude is probably racist.

Look no further than SU - old white guy, grew up in small town utah, mormon ties, etc - shouldn't shock anybody when he posts some of the racist shit he's posted on here the last few weeks.

Because I have a bunch of old white guy ranchers, farmers, and coal miner relatives. Most of them weren't racist but the talk a lot like Bundy. Even my father, who was as corporate as it gets, occasionally used the terms negro and colored. That's the way people of his era spoke. Yes it would make me cringe but my father was not a racist.

I posted this to add to the discussion. I rolled my eyes as much as anyone when I first read the NYT article. However, I found feelings were tempered a bit when I read the entire quote.

You seem to paint with the same broad brush as do racists.

I don't deny that. I'm simply not surprised when I find out some old guy in rural Nevada is racist. And Bundy clearly is.

I agree that he's clearly racist. Don't you find it at all disturbing that you view "old white" guys in small towns the way you do? One might even call that racist.

What, that I'm not surprised when a guy like that makes a racist comment? It's based on experience. It is indeed disturbing so many of them I've run into think that way, but it is what it is. I'd say if you are surprised by it, you are either naive or you've had a very different experience with guys in that demographic than I have.

I shouldn't have made the 90% comment - that was unfair - but my overall point stands.
