It seems the only vocal exmo I know that hasn't ended up there is SU. I sometimes wish he were more prominent.
Prominent exmos. Haha. Sunstone is tossing KK into a janitors closet at the last minute because they don't have room for her elsewhere at the conference. And she is panhandling for money to buy a computer. Hope she doesn't get too high on that sort of power and influence!

I think her and Dehlin's path are similar. Both of them did a good job shining lights on some of the church's deficiencies, and for awhile both put on a very good public faces for their causes. But at some point they started to believe the hero worship from the disaffected. Which is a shame, because their causes are worthy of support.

When you become a caricature, whether by your own doing or not, it is time to step down and let someone else carry the torch.

Are there any torch bearers in the wings waiting to take it up?

I honestly don't know. I only hear about them here - and when they have reached the caricature status and show up on mainstream media.

That's a good question. First of all, people like Dehlin and Kelly deserve a huge amount of credit for going public with their issues. They helped legitimize what anonymous internet forums had been bitching about for years (not sure if this is irony). That said, the disaffected tend to keep their need for a prophet when they leave the church. Dehlin and others became those prophets to many.

I remember being in a similar situation here. I don't think I'm too different than some here. I really appreciated Mormon Stories and listened to quite a few podcasts. I sympathized with his causes and a lot of them became mine. Leading up to his excommunication, many here correctly identified pretty stupid behavior on his part. I found myself wanting to defend him, just because I felt his body of work deserved it. He had become somewhat of a prophet to me (I use that term very loosely; I was never an adulating fan but I did admire him). It took a bit, but I did realize that his behavior was really asinine, and I could stop defending it while still appreciating the good he's done.

Same thing has happened to Kelly, though her arc towards caricature was much quicker. I think John Larsen is a little different, because from early on most everyone knew he was an asshole . Anyways, the reason why I'm saying this is that I hope eventually the online communities of Mormonism will not need identifiable torchbearers, much less prophets. I think the important foundational work has been done; all the information one could ever possibly need to decide what level of Mormonism one participates in is readily available. Although the official church will never be beat in terms of organizational power, online communities are growing and leading to significant relationships. Some 'leaders' have put a lot of energy making these online interactions as important as traditional ones. However, people need to drop the need to treat leaders as inherently better than the rest, and to trust their own judgement on what to base their lives on. They need to own their own mistakes and failures, and not be disappointed when they find out people they have put on a pedestal invariably fall.

Related to this, I found this website interesting. It's a nice aggregate of online information and support for different levels of Mormon activity, from all in to apostate: http://www.mormonspectrum.org/.

While your post may be satire (I wouldn't put it past you to hold these beliefs), the sad thing is that this is basically the attitude of the LDS church and many members of the church.

Kelly and her husband are "childless by choice". Perhaps old_gregg's low t joke wasn't that far off the mark?

Whoa. Just went back to Kelly's page and saw this:

I just found out that Jerilyn Hassell Pool's daughter was hired this May as the office manager, the person in charge of the day-to-day operations of the Sunstone office. I feel like that's a piece of this puzzle that was missing in my understanding. Definitely meant no disrespect to Grace, or any others working behind the scenes.
That's real classy. 'I'm not insinuating anything at all, but the main person mad at me for innocently pointing out that my fame requires the largest room at Sunstone just so happens to be the mother of someone who works there. No disrespect at all, but now I understand everything.'

This is turning into a pretty good cat fight...

Jerilyn Hassell Pool Do not bring my daughter into this.
Kate Kelly I didn't get the connection. It makes me sense why you would take this critique so personally.

I wonder if it constitutes irony (ruling?) when these ex-mo groups go at each other with such hateful spite...given that one of their main tenants is to charge ortho-mos with unChristlike behavior towards them.

Also, looks like KK has edited/deleted a number of her responses. Looks like she took a page out of Dehlin's book of trying to erase the internet when it mkaes you look bad.

Sure, but I don't think it is fair to assume all these folks are ex-mos.
