Food storage sucks! Well, it's good counsel but I hate when people that follow the "one-year counsel" move into the ward. Granted I only have about a three month supply, if that.
I also find it funny that so people have such weird things in their storage. Wheat, seriously? Why would anyone have wheat? We just have flour, which lasts at least 10 years. We cycle through the flour every couple years to keep it fresh. It's nice having things that we [will] actually use in our food storage.

My parents have pretty consistently kept at least a 6 month food storage for as long as I can remember them having a place to put it. I also remember us more or less living on the food storage for about 5 months when my dad was opening his own derm practice.
I liked that we had a bunch of stuff that we actually used. I think the biggest problem for a lot of people is two-fold 1) the cost is prohibitive and 2) nowhere to store it. We have nowhere to keep a year's supply in our apartment. I try to build up by buying two of whatever canned good I'm purchasing. I can see the need for some food storage but I wonder about these people that have a basement like "Blast from the Past" and end up throwing out tons of food. This is another area where I believe the saying "Moderation in all things" applies.Comment

I think food storage is a really good idea. It gets my Apostate Stamp of Approval. Of course a year supply of food means very little if you only have a week supply of potable water.Comment

It happened about three years ago - school was in Highland, with students living in Highland, Alpine & Lehi. The storm dumped about 8 inches of snow between 3 pm & 6pm, and had 50+ mph winds associated with it, blowing more snow down from the top of the mountain. Highland Highway was closed as soon as the snow started falling - so much snow was falling/drifting that plows couldn't keep it clear. All of the elementary school kids in our ward attended that school. They all eventually made it home that night - six or seven guys with snowmobiles ferried kids back from the school (about 8 miles away) until everyone got home.
Eventually there were 8-foot drifts on Highland Highway - which was finally opened at about 10am the next morning...Comment
