Mormon Food Storage

I find food storage to be one of the most amusing items in the Church. I think the concept of food storage is probably derived from living in a desert in an agrarian and pioneer culture. It also has some value currently because it allows a family to weather difficult times. Of course, financial savings would be more helpful but food storage is a nice follow up to a savings plan. The thing I think is most amusing about food storage is the belief that the recommendation to acquire food storage is intended to prepare the saints for some great specific calamity. Many saints believe that a massive calamity will require the use of buckets of wheat and 2 litre diet coke bottles of water. I find that highly unlikely.

Food storage isn't about calamity.* I helped many people in New Orleans shovel their food storage into FEMA dumpsters. My branch president's front yard had a full crop of wheat in it. People out in St. Bernard Parish actually had chickens come roost around their house because a corn crop sprung up from their food storage seed collection.

Food storage is so you can weather a storm whether it's being laid off, or some other event that cramps your financial situation. Money is worthless in a food shortage. If some pandemic kept us all isolated at home, food storage is wonderful......I take comfort in knowing that the 200 lbs of rice and beans I have stored could keep us alive long enough for help to come or danger to pass.

I knew a man in New Orleans who survived for 2 weeks in his attic because his family had their 72-hour kits up there. Otherwise, he would've died. His house was surrounded by 21 feet of water for 2 weeks.

Mostly I think that food storage is about obedience.

What's so bad with food storage? Sure some people go over the top, but is money really more dependable?

I suggest having both, but if the going really got tough, I think I would rather have food than money. Particularly with how little leg our currency currently has to stand on.

Maybe I will start stockpiling gold bars in my basement.

I don't think I'm pathologically cynical. My post makes it clear that my amusement is based in the assumption that the prophet's counsel predicts some worldwide calamity.

Personally, I think food storage is most helpful when funds run short. That's why I think food money savings might be a better tool.

Nothing's wrong with food storage. The assumption that we know how it will be used is funny.

I have a friend who determined that because the temple in SLC had gotten a seismic upgrade it meant there was an earthquake on the way. He and his wife went and bought a bunch of food storage because of it. I thought their behavior was hilarious.

Jefe banned me from religious posts and when I asked him why and what specific examples there were of my "consistent opposition to the Church" he couldn't come up with any. Instead he cited "a general feeling amongst myself and others that you are anti mormon" or some other nonsense.

He banned me for my post about how amazing it was that peer pressure and socialization can result in missionary activities amongst young men. I couldn't help but laugh because I thought it was a blatantly positive post. Sometimes I think people read tone in where there isn't any.

Not to get involved, but didn't GBH explicitly say that he wasn't predicting any impending calamity when he last counseled the Church to get their finances and food storage in order?
