  • Gay and Mormon: BYU hosted panel for gay BYU students

Interesting article about an upcoming panel hosted by BYU for gay students that are active LDS.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/53...panel.html.csp

Unfortunately the panel isnt open to the public, it is for students currently enrolled in certain classes. I wonder how the panelists will be received. Takes a lot of courage to out yourself like that but I view this as a positive step in the right direction for BYU.

The article does mention some local yokels trying to stir up trouble but that sort of stuff gets the big from me. The real story is that BYU is allowing this to happen on campus, officially sanctioned, even in a limited manner. Good job on this one, BYU.

Do they have immunity from being expelled?

BYU changed its rules. You are no longer expelled for being openly gay. Sexual activity will put your status in jeopardy, however.

It has been advertised around here as open to the public. I've had it on my calendar for a few days and still plan to go (if it doesn't get canceled). Notwithstanding SOL's (yeah, that's their acronym) email campaign to try to get people furious that this is happening on the campus of the church's school.

Reminds me a little of that openly gay UVU student who ran this week for election (and lost). He was subject to an anonymous e-mail campaign that criticized his sexuality. I know he's not a byu student, but the e-mail made a deal about how Utah Valley's traditions, beliefs, and values need to oppose homosexuality.

OhioBlue, would love to read your take on the panel once it wraps.

Do you have reason to believe that it will be cancelled? I would assume that some opposition would be expected when BYU signed off on the event. I would hope that this doesn't damper enthusiasm. Cancelling the event would send an ironic message to everyone about acceptance and understanding.

I will be interested to see how many show up. Maybe we (members of the church attending BYU) have come a long ways.

However, from the outside looking in, I would be nervous attedning such a meeting. Especially if I wasn't openly gay.

Not really, other than that on a smaller scale, similar things have been shut down (quietly) by the university once they are enough of a threat to be an unwelcome lightning rod. Already, the statements in the Trib about it just being for certain classes represent in my mind an attempt to control this thing and not let it get too big.

I'd give it at least a 50% chance of either being called off or (perhaps more likely) significantly restricted to a smaller number of people.

If it goes off as currently advertised, I'd all but guarantee it'll be standing room only. I'm going way early.

There has been a lot of gay talk in the Foyer lately. Maybe someone could start something about City Creek Center to change things up a bit.

It sounds there are some differing viewpoints on that:

The fliers seem to invite the interested public and do not specify any course listings, indicating only that it’s sponsored by the sociology department and will be held in a lecture hall in the Thomas L. Martin Building. Morgan and sociology chairwoman Renata Forste did not return phone messages.
It's good for college-age kids to have a forum to have that kind of dialogue, especially at BYU. I knew a couple of homosexuals at BYU; they generally had a rough time of it.

It's very brave of those students to participate, both in the forum and in the newspaper articles. Bravo to them.

BYU should be careful doing this, someone could look at it as an opportunity to meet fellow gays on campus much like Sam Malone used a sex addiction group to meet horny women and Jesse Pinkman used a meth group to sell his product.
