Come on. There must be someone here who will put a number to it. The number is worth thinking about because my guess is that no matter what number it is, it'll be a big deal to uncorrelated Mormons. We're a people who are incredibly sensitive about who gets paid how much for the kind of work MS does.

It should be enough to make MS a non-profit, but probably less than $600K per year.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostCome on. There must be someone here who will put a number to it. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

It would probably be based on the value Dehlin brings to the venture in terms of revenues relative to what others are doing after taking care of expenses. I have no data to work with, so I cannot even make a guess.Originally posted by Rosebud View PostCome on. There must be someone here who will put a number to it. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I'd bet if I pulled out the word 'hypocrite' and started using it to describe church leaders, with the same loose standards that have been applied in this thread, you would call foul. Just a guess. I think we should avoid that word, most of the time, and give people a little wiggle room to make mistakes and figure things out before we start hammering them with that label. That is the 'mighty weak point' I thought we agreed on.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostNot really. Certainly not in the way you described it.

I agree with this. I think there are plenty of people that do not want to choose a team. They are comfortable drifting from group to group. They understand those that have fallen away but have relationships and share a common language with those that are in. They don't buy all the LDS church teaches, but they appreciate a good portion of it along with other positive aspects.Originally posted by nikuman View PostI'm still not convinced UtahDan is right about not being able to straddle the fence. I'm not even sure there is a fence to be straddled. I think there are many more stories of the people who discuss this sort of stuff and yet have found a middle path than we think because they are not the vocal ones. I do know of several. And I admit I could be misunderstanding what UD is saying.
I think the real tragedy is that there are very few voices from within the church that both can and are willing to discuss the issues. The voices are there but they are silent. The reasons why are a discussion for another thread.
Dan seems to be saying that there is really no "big tent." There is just a tent. A very strict tent and you have to choose to be in or out and there is no re-entry.
It seems predictable, though, that one that has chosen a team would believe that there is no other way.

I see. In other words, you think I am being hypocritical.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostI'd bet if I pulled out the word 'hypocrite' and started using it to describe church leaders, with the same loose standards that have been applied in this thread, you would call foul. Just a guess.
Robin, please stop pretending to be such a martyr for MS. I can guarantee you that I have spent more time participating in and I know a hell of a lot more about that group than you do. I like MS. I have lots of friends in the MS crowd. I think I have earned the right to express my opinion about a policy decision that they are debating.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostI think we should avoid that word, most of the time, and give people a little wiggle room to make mistakes and figure things out before we start hammering them with that label.
