I would rather play Frisbee than use drugs. I guess I'm following the devil down the slippery slope to hell.

As a counselor in the EQP, my basic policy was that I would do whatever the EQP asked me to do to help (within reason) and not much else.

Don't worry, LVAllen, I'm sure you have counselors who have a much better attitude and think that they can make a difference for a bunch of thirtysomething men who are busy with work, family, and their own beliefs about home teaching. They, unlike me, will be great!

Actually, I remembered a way in which I magnified my calling. I used to invite a bunch of guys over to watch BYU games every week. We'd grab a projector from the church and have an open house for the guys. Basically a way to build "quorum unity" by doing something together that a bunch of us were going to do anyway. Probably sounds silly, but I'd like to think that in some small way, our ward was improved by watching football together.

Nope, he's basically screwed and should leave the church now.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. • Those who have said EQP is awful are right. I was the most burned out I've ever been on church when I was released as EQP. I was released to go into the Branch Presidency and apart from the long Sundays, Branch Presidency was way way better and much less stressful.

What helped me was to simply set limits. I only allowed two nights a week to work on church stuff, whether it was working on HT lists, visits, or other activities. Anything else that wasn't an emergency I either didn't attend or said would need to wait. This may sound like common sense to everyone here, but before I figured it out and allowed myself to be ok with doing only what I could within reason, I was much happier, and more effective.

EQP is one of those callings (especially if you are in a struggling ward), where you could literally spend 100% of your free time fulfilling various tasks and addressing needs and still have a mountain of things to do all the time. Much better to know your strength and pace yourself. I know from experience you can't do well in the calling and other aspects of your life will suffer if you let the calling consume you and burn you out.

I'm just going to throw this out there. I'm terrible at doing home teaching (think I visited my families like once over the last 6 months, but in my defense, I was also the only one who showed up to move one of my families after everyone had been informed that the YM were going to take care of it). I haven't been to the temple in a couple of years, despite holding a recommend and being maybe 40 minutes away from it. Scripture study is sporadic, and usually spurred on by "Wait, what did the gospel doctrine / EQ instructor just read out of the manual? That sounds like crap. Let me see..." I have no problem with female ordination, and think the excommunication of KK was more politically motivated the Church wants to let on. I don't have any clue what could have possibly motivated anyone to call me as EQP, especially since I don't know the SP or bishop from Adam.

But, despite all that, I've felt the Spirit more frequently and with more intensity than I can recall in recent history as I've pored over the names of people I don't know in an attempt to glean some small insight into who should be my counselors. So, take it for what you will. But I think I'm going to be fine. Much better than Chuckie Keeton and the rest of the Aggies next week, in any case.

Wait a minute. You ward still moves people? Even worse, it makes the Young Men move people?

I would be completely embarrassed if I were dragging around the deacon's quorum to move my stuff.

Most of the embarrassment would be from having a bunch of broken stuff.

Popular family, he was in the YM Presidency, and when I offered during a pre-move visit, he told me the YM were handling it. Yeah, right. Ended up being me and a couple of family members, none of whom was from the ward. As far as the concept of having the AP handle moves, it would make sense because it's kind of a temporal welfare issue, and AP is tasked with temporal welfare. (Of course, the AP was tasked with that long before the idea arose to regularly ordain YM to the AP in order to keep them out of mischief, so it kind of fails in the modern execution)

We moved someone this last weekend. We only broke one item in the move: the glass door to a curio cabinet.

                    • Uh oh, cant stop. Now I am on my EQ-as-a-moving service stump. We have a couple in our ward who was been here for less than a year. The husband couldn't find a job so he flew back to his old job in another state and was offered employment, to start right away. He left his wife to pack everything up, and didn't come back to help with the move even though it was a 3-day weekend. Who does that?

My wife learned that the Relief Society still cleans people's homes after the mom had surgery, even though there are multiple able-bodied adults and teenagers at home. Needless to say, my wife was not a happy camper last night. I, on the other hand, had a good time playing Destiny while she was gone.
                        Not that, sickos.

That's ridiculous. About equal with having the Young Men move a person.

At least they got some family members to show up, I guess.

I disagree with your assessment of moving someone as a matter of essential temporal welfare (with the obvious exceptions of the disabled/widowed/etc). But that's just me.
