I can't remember if it was on CUF or CG, but I think it was steel blue that was calling me out for not attending a special fireside about our ward being split. He said i was just trying to be "cool" by not caring that my ward was being split. He didn't believe me that I really didn't care and had zero desire to go all the way back to church on Sunday night to hear more about it.

lol. I love steel blue. Where has he been lately?

The last time I attended an adult session of stake conference was about 5 years ago when my wife and I were asked to speak. Prior to that, I believe I had attended once.

        • Count me as one who didn't know there was such a thing as an adult session or Saturday night session of stake conference until I was close to 30. I may have attended one at about that time, but not since.

The last one I attended was several years ago. We were new to the stake and didn't know (trust) any of the young women to babysit and didn't have family near by. So we brought our two kids to the adult session. We got more than a few stares and furrowed brows. Haven't been back to a Saturday session since.

              How old were the kids?

They were 4 and 1.5. We sat in the back and the kids colored and ate snacks.

                • We have taken our kids on a couple different occasions to the adult session of Stake Conference. We got nothing but smiles or people offering to hold/play with the kids. Granted, our kids are exceptionally cute so that may have something to do with our positive experiences.

                  • I learned about adult sessions of Stake Conference when I was in Truman Madsen's stake at BYU. He unapolagetically disobeyed instructions on which instruments are acceptable in church meetings, so his conference sessions were not to be missed. Some great amateur orchestras complete with percussion and brass sections were assembled for some of the best music I have ever heard in church meetings.

No surprise. Consider that Noah was 600 years old when the ark was built. Assuming he and his boys (take that however you wish) were simply average from a reproductive standpoint, after 600 years the Noah Family would have numbered well into the thousands. They had to build something like the Oasis of the Seas.

It probably took longer because they had to catch the Gophers and harvest their wood.

                            • We had a good stake conference session today, including an interesting talk by our MP. He said the mission has been used for a variety of pilot programs, psychological studies and market research. Recently, a fairly detailed study of missions worldwide revealed that missionaries in our mission are among the happiest and most satisfied. He said several reasons apparently account for this, including, (i) our mission was the first, or at least among the first, to eliminate tracting, which resulted in a big drop in missionary stress levels, (ii) each missionary participates in a minimum of 500 acts of service (non-proselyting) with more than 1,000 hours spent, (iii) our mission's percentage of sister missionaries (apparently over 50%, but I may have not heard that correctly) is among the highest in the Church, which was by design.

As to the last point, he said that every male missionary will have viewed pornography (some a lot more than others) prior to his mission, and between that and video games will not have had a great deal of positive interaction with young women. When they get to our mission, they're suddenly having to work closely with women and they're confused. He said he frequently get phone calls from elders who say they're really attracted to one of the sister missionaries. I was surprised that he said he usually just laughs at them, and tells them that they're suffering from D.O.G. Syndrome (delusions of grandeur) and that the sister is WAAAAAY above whatever the elder might have to offer. But he encourages the elder to focus on the work, not the sister, and maybe by the end of the mission, but not a moment before, he might come close to their level. He'll even put in a good word for them after the mish. He said problems with the elder/sister proximity thing are declining and he believes the recent changes have been a huge plus for the mission and the Church.

                              • Interesting thoughts PAC, I hadn't thought of the need to a work with young women and their inability to do so as a motive for bolstering the sister missionary ranks.

My ward has elders and sisters for the first time and oddly, they are not allowed to call each other and can only be in the same place if the Bishop or WML is there also. Seems like a silly rule to me.
