From a 13 year old viewpoint, older people can drive. Why can't the 13 year old drive? It is a double standard. Some 13 year olds would drive responsibly, some wouldn't. I think I will lend my car to a 13 year old *if* they are likely to drive responsibly.Originally posted by imanihonjin View PostSorry, it is irresponsible for their to be alcohol at an underage party. Kids are idiots and there will be some jackass or jackasses at nearly everyone of these parties who loses control. Again there is no double standard as the standard is simply this, you and I aren't going to be somewhere where the law is being actively broken and where there is a significant likelihood that others are going to lose control.
I also don't understand the bolded part. You say don't spell out which environments are prohibited but then state that strip clubs and drug houses are off limits? Aren't you afraid if you tell them that, they are just going to lie to you and tell you they are handing with their Mormon buddies and the next thing you know they are in a crocodile's belly?Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Good hell, if you are using my teenage self to justify anything you are worse parent than I thought.Originally posted by Pheidippides View PostBecause *that* has worked over the last 50 years. I am pretty sure that is off limits too.

Good point. Teenagers should be able to grasp the concept that age does factor into the appropriateness of behavior. By the error in logic you point out, a 13 year old girl may want to date a 22 year old man and may say it isn't fair to deny them this because they see that their older sister who is 20 is dating a 22 year old or that Mom and Date date too. What a double standard.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostFrom a 13 year old viewpoint, older people can drive. Why can't the 13 year old drive? It is a double standard. No, I'm resigned to the notion that my kids won't drink and do drugs. I don't give them the opportunity to lie about being in places or gatherings where there might be beer because I realize that's out of their control. I also realize that I'm being judgemental that their freinds will not drink responsibly by requiring them to leave at the first sign of a beer can.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostPossibly, if your kids are liars. Apparently yours are. No problem.
I wasn't LDS growing up and I didnt drink because one, I didnt want to, and two, I thought it was stupid. So i never lied to my parents about drinking or doing drugs. You seem resigned to the notion that all teenagers are going to drink and do drugs.
I'm also not under the illusion that prohibiting them from parties where there is alcohol will guarantee that they will remain sober.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

Quite the blanket statement. As a teenager, I was at plenty of parties where alcohol was present and no one lost control. They are called weekend parties. Adults have them all the time.Originally posted by imanihonjin View PostSorry, it is irresponsible for their to be alcohol at an underage party. I guess I'll worry about that the first time one of my kids asks permission to attend a strip club or drug house. When they ask to go to a party, I don't grill them on whether there might be alcohol there and force them to leave at the sight of it. If others are drinking responsibly, I'm OK with them being there and won't make them lie about it during an inquisition when they return home.Originally posted by imanihonjin View PostI also don't understand the bolded part. It's not disappointing. I was just countering DDD when he stated that I was apparently resigned to my kids drinking and doing drugs. I'm not resigned to it. WoW hasn't been a problem with any of my teenagers.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWhy is that disappointing to you?
As a teenager, my parents did not set limits on being at parties where there was beer; they trusted my judgement and I have never had a problem with drinking. In that regard, I'm a "liar" like you and have managed to abstain for 50+ years. But I had LDS friends whose parents had a no tolerance policy towards being anywhere around alcohol. IMO, that heightened the allure of alcohol and my Mormon friends just lied to their parents and went to the same parties that I did except they did imbibe.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

I heard of a dad who thought it was one of the better teaching moments of his when he offered a taste of his hoppy beer to his 13 and 16 year old. They couldn't believe their luck that their dad was going to let them drink!
They both swallowed excitedly, which quickly contorted their faces into disgust.
They haven't asked for a drink since. Or so I've heard."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd.
