I heard the phrase "because the prophet said so" several times as an explanation for why we should strictly observe the counsel in the FSOY pamphlet. I also learned that if you hold a baby during GD, the time goes by much faster than when you are not holding a baby.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

How many things do we have to do for no other reason than "God said so"?Originally posted by Moliere View PostI heard the phrase "because the prophet said so" several times as an explanation for why we should strictly observe the counsel in the FSOY pamphlet. I learned that I'm still too impetuous. We have major weeds problems at our church building. Each weeks dozens of faithful members sweat their balls off in the sun to weed the areas around the building. If we had a lot of mulch in those areas, a lot of the weeds wouldn't be able to grow. FM finally got us mulch, but it was about 1/4 of what we needed and we were told no more would be coming. In PH, someone asked the Bishop, "several of us are willing to buy the mulch and spread it if it means we don't have to weed anymore, is that an option?" The bishop responded, "Well, we'll have to see about that..." to which I piped up, "Don't let him off the hook that easy, get a yes or no answer." Bishop turned around with a shocked look, "Well, if it's up to me, I say yes."
People were pretty shocked and it made my weekly "missionary moment" spiel a little awkward. I should have just shut up, but I'm so damn sick of everyone being concerned about what the handbook says and getting lukewarm answers from bishoprics who are afraid of the SP'cy that I acted out.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Ah, obedience for obedience sake.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostHow many things do we have to do for no other reason than "God said so"?
Why not buy Roundup and just spray the weeds? It would take one guy probably 10 minutes to cover the area and you'd just have to do it once every other week or so.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostI learned that I'm still too impetuous. It's more what the youth have to do. I am not bound by FTSOY.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostHow many things do we have to do for no other reason than "God said so"?"I think it was King Benjamin who said 'you sorry ass shitbags who have no skills that the market values also have an obligation to have the attitude that if one day you do in fact win the PowerBall Lottery that you will then impart of your substance to those without.'"

Obedience to commandments is fine, but even then, in Mormonism, there is usually a justification given. It's when the justification is no longer valid that we throw our hands up in the air and say "because [insert prophet name] said so!" This is the case with the WOW, polygamy, etc. Maybe some of this is revisionist history to try and downplay our weird past, but some of it exists today.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostWhat's wrong with that?
Obedience to counsel is different story. It's not a sin to date before you are 16 or to wear two pairs of earrings or to wear a shirt with no sleeves, yet the youth are told to do that because the prophet said so. It's just an odd justification (obedience for obedience's sake) for a set of rules that aren't commandments."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. Yeah right, I'm going inactive if something as restrictive as FTSOY comes out in adult form.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostI'm hearing rumors of a FTSOA."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. But where is the justification coming from? So are you saying you prefer "because the prophet justified what God said" to "because God said so"?Originally posted by Moliere View PostObedience to commandments is fine, but even then, in Mormonism, there is usually a justification given. Yesterday we sang "In Humility, Our Savior" for the sacrament hymn. It has always been my favorite sacrament hymn, but this time the words touched my soul in a way I haven't felt in years. Especially the second verse. These small experiences are what I turn to when church service seems difficult.

I would dare bet that most members don't distinguish between counsel and commandment.Originally posted by Moliere View PostObedience to counsel is different story.
