Today the bishop kept the HP and Elders together for a couple of minutes after Priesthood opening exercises while dismissing the young men. He first asked us to re-emphasize family scripture reading, FHE and prayer. Then he said that when we are traveling on business, we should not watch TV in our hotel rooms. Technically he said "when you are alone", so I guess if we picked up a woman in the bar and brought her upstairs with us, the TV can be on.
I seem to remember someone else being told this, but couldn't find anything.
I was standing next to a friend who travels 10 to 15 nights a month. He said "wow, I watch TV a lot in hotels. But I'll try". I replied "I'm not going to try". I've always kind of been a bad-ass like that.

My intrepid BIL presented the HP TFOT lesson today and, having been given no direction by his bishopric, talked about Randy Bott and the lack of understanding within the Church about the priesthood ban. It was interesting and informative to see that many concurred with Bott's statements. My BIL did a great job of contradicting those, along with others offered up by the class. Many hadn't heard of the 1949 FP Statement before and were more than a little unsettled. But the class ended on an upnote. That I didn't log onto CUF or any other website for the entire class bears solemn witness to the excellence of the hour.

Did he say why? I can't watch a Jazz game or something?
I wonder if he realizes someone who watches porn isn't going to be listening to his advice about watching TV anyway. For those that aren't tempted and want to follow the direction of the Bishop, what an unecessary invasion of free agency.

I think the bishop is mostly worried about his ward member's finances and big spending while they are on vacation. If you watch porn on TV, you will most likely be paying for it, while if you just leave the TV off and watch it on your computer, you can do it for free. He's resigned to the fact that guys are going to watch porn, he just wants them to save a little cash.Originally posted by byu71 View PostDid he say why? I can't watch a Jazz game or something?

I learned more about love and companionship. The patriarch wept today during the meeting as he talked about how much he missed his wife of 77 years who recently died."Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"
"So where does the power come from to see the race to its end...from within"

Does that only apply to men? Is he telling the widows in your ward the same thing? What if you are divorced? I imagine oxcoug is in trouble.Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostToday the bishop kept the HP and Elders together for a couple of minutes after Priesthood opening exercises while dismissing the young men. Why don't people stand up in these meetings and insist on being treated as adults?"More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

Because they are humoring the leaders.Originally posted by Solon View PostSo ridiculous.

The leaders are probably tired of guys coming in and confessing watching porn and masturbating while on business trips. Can't say I blame them because having to listen to that would be pretty annoying, not to mention disgusting.

I learned that money is not evil."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

4th Sunday - Conference Talk from Elder Tom Perry.
"As we interact with people of other faiths we should inquire about their religion and their beliefs." I loved hearing that from Elder Perry. I think too often when sharing the gospel, we make it a one way street, instead of a meaningful give and take interaction.

I travel a lot and never watch porn. My company doesn't pay for TV entertainment and I'll be damned if I'm going to shell out $13.99 for a show I'm only going to watch for seven minutes.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostBecause they are humoring the leaders.
