This is true.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI find that Elders Quorum tends to be much more inviting to open thought than Sunday school.
I think a lot of guys who want to say progressive or controversial things hold back in Sunday School because they think it will embarrass the wife if she is there (or even if she isn't there because other women will hear it). Maybe that's just me.
In EQ when it's a smaller group that I know really well and the womenfolk are absent I'm much more likely say something that raises some eyebrows.

I said this to my wife and she said that she thinks the same is true of Relief Society.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostThis is true.

Which leads to the obvious conclusion that the High Priests are ruining it for everyone. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Our SS and EQ are sort of the opposite. We have a number of good discussions in SS and then go to EQ and it is crickets. EQ is getting a little better as we find the right instructors, but our SS class always has a good mix of opinions that draw out a good discussion. I'll never forget the time when the bishop's wife raised her hand and said "There's always something that has bugged me about the temple..." Everyone sat up in their seats and watched the bishop as we all waited to hear what she said. Needless to say, SS is a good time.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostThis is true.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Very cool. I had a similar experience with my SP a while back. I think these guys "mature" a lot over their tenure and start narrowing in on what really matters. It's pretty refreshing.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWe had stake conf. this weekend. I have always considered our SP to be kind a hardliner, but he gave two great talks this weekend. He begged us to not judge one another and told us to keep in mind that there is a typically a struggle or two going on in every home of which we may not be aware and that we should always treat one another with love and kindness. He talked about going after the lost sheep. He told parents to love their teenage/college-age children no matter what and that none of us should ever made a big deal about multiple piercings, tattoos, long hair, etc.
Great messages. I was inspired.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Or maybe the membership get to know them a little better and stop judging the "suit".Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostVery cool. I had a similar experience with my SP a while back. There may be a sliver of truth to this, but in my experience, this phenomenon isn't limited to this particular SP. To a lesser extent, I've seen it with bishops, EQPs and RSPs as well. I think it simply comes with seeing a wide range of problems and issues and learning to focus in on what matters.Originally posted by kccougar View PostOr maybe the membership get to know them a little better and stop judging the "suit".Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

A couple of years ago my wife was in a meeting with our SP and he announced some of the upcoming changes related to management of single's wards. She said something like "Why are they doing that?" and he proceeded to chew her out in front of everyone in the meeting for questioning the brethren. She hasn't asked a question in a meeting with him since that time.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostThere may be a sliver of truth to this, but in my experience, this phenomenon isn't limited to this particular SP. Tell her in the future that her response needs to be something along the lines of "President Uchtdorf says that once we know the "why", then the rest makes sense. I'm just asking the question that an Apostle and member of the First Presidency says I should ask."Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostA couple of years ago my wife was in a meeting with our SP and he announced some of the upcoming changes related to management of single's wards. Reminds me of when I was a YM in a ward on the afternoon block. Because several SS teachers quit, they divided my age group into two classes to split up the "troublemakers". With new classrooms and teachers, three of us decided to skip SS and walk the two blocks to Mickey D's for soda and fries. Then we'd walk back in time for priesthood. Next week, we did the same routine. Got away with it for more than a month before any of us were asked where we were during SS.Originally posted by Uncle Ted View PostYou should just take take your son to Mickey D's. They have free WiFi and it will save from having to clean up the lunch mess in the car.
For several years, I thought we got away with it because we were exceptionally cunning. I graduated HS and attended GD; the instructor was the same guy who was then our new SS teacher (14-15 at the time). He was speaking on the topic of free agency and lost sheep and used the example of how I would skip his SS class (he knew where we went). But when I was ready to attend his class and be taught, that both student and teacher were edified. And how glad he was to see me once again in his class by my choice.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”
