    Recipe?

I love the stuff. I gain 15 lbs of eggnog weight every Christmas season.

        Danimal's family egg nog recipe

        6 eggs, separated
        3/4 cup sugar
        2 tsp vanilla
1 and 1/2 cup cups half & half
        1 and 1/2 cups milk
        nutmeg to taste

Beat yolks with sugar until thick. Add vanilla, half and half and milk. Beat whites until stiff and gently fold into yolk mixture. Sprinkle with egg nog

Yes, this recipe contains raw eggs. But if Rocky can hack it, I bet you can too.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

          Cool, thanks.
The beaten egg whites is a nice touch.
And I'm totally cool with raw eggs! Although I probably will use the storebought ones for this one...

If eggnog became available st the store year-round, I would be dead from clogged arteries within 5 years. Eggnog is probably due to approximately 5 pounds of holiday weight for me every year. I like eggnog a lot.

I am thinking of using it to make ice cream this year. I assume that would work fine.

I also make home-made occasionally. It is pretty easy, but not easy enough that it endangers my health. Also, if don't like raw eggs and like a thicker eggnog (like you get in the stores), you can put the eggs into the dairy over a stovetop and cook similar to a custard.

I usually leave the egg whites out of mine.

                Marsupial,
How do you make the 'adult' version? That recipe is similar to others I have seen, and they typically call for 1/2 cup of Bourbon. I think the traditional egg snog has a mix of Bourbon, brandy, and rum.

Spiced rum would work too. Something like Captain Morgan's or other dark rum.

Note the alcohol will kill any bacteria in the raw egg, in case anybody is worried...

I think rum is much more traditionally used than bourbon, no?

We've never made the adult version before. It'll be a first for us.

Probably, but it apparently depends upon from whence the 'tradition' comes.

Google turned up this interesting factoid:

All of the old "classic" ones (such as Jerry Thomas' 1862 recipe) that I have seen call for a combination of rum and/or brandy. And in the case of the Baltimore Eggnog I made last night, both plus Madeira.

Keep in mind that the recipe is believed to have come over to America from England where brandy would have been the dominant spirit. When it was made in the northern parts of the U.S. (or what became the U.S.), rum was more prevalent as brandy was still expensive. In the southern parts of the U.S., whiskey though was more abundant. Bottom line is that people used what they had around them without breaking the bank.

However, fewer cocktail recipe books were penned in the South, so the Northern recipes dominate the older literature.

quality versus quantity does not have to be a winner-take-all proposition.

Yeah, my Grandpa had those (they probably came from Playboy or one of the auto parts companies back in the '60s). Their 'clothes' would disappear when you put liquid in the cup.

Brandy is the traditional spirit for Eggnog, but I like burbon in mine just fine.
