Based on how stupid the last season(s) were, I had decided not to watch this season. Now I may have to watch it to see the CoJCoLDS connection.

    • It's quite a bit of watching for a pretty small connection and the true nature of the connection isn't revealed until the very end - kind of like the Gideon bible in the original Mission: Impossible movie. If you want to spare yourself all the watching, here are the details:

      Spoiler for Spoiler:

In one of the early episodes, there is a Nigerian political consultant/activist dude, who we originally think is a good guy, who says he was raised in Nigeria and saw his father get killed in war there and ultimately Mormon missionaries came to his village and helped people and helped him get to America, but no mention on whether he was actually Mormon himself.

Later, the ex-Director of the CIA, who turns out to be a bad guy, is killed because the other bad guys think he's going to give them up, but before he dies, in his house on the desk is a quad version of the scriptures that the camera lands on for a minute. I think it might have showed the CIA guy putting a bookmark in it before he died my memory is a little fuzzy here.

Later, the political consultant dude turns out to be a bad guy and Jack Ryan and Jim Clark need to figure out how to decode the secret message with destinations and routes of bombs that are going to blow up the us that the bad guys are selling. They manage to figure out the standard LDS quad, referred to as "the Mormon bible", is used as the "one time pad" for the code (one time pad is a legitimate cryptography concept). It is revealed that the deceased ex-Director of the CIA was a Mormon so he used the LDS quad as the source for the OTP. Of course they don't reveal what portion of text in the vast LDS quad was the OTP or how they figured out which portion of text it was. Even if the dude had bookmarked a specific page it's still a lot of text to brute force through to figure out what portion of it was the OTP. Maybe the dude had highlighted a particular verse and we just never saw it? Or maybe I missed it when watching. Anyway, that's the connection.

Of course, the funny thing is that after I was done watching I googled "Jack Ryan Mormon Bible" just to see what the Internet had to say. Not much out there but the first references that pop up are exmo reddit and the comments are pretty lame and simultaneously amusing because they're so bitter. My favorite was the guy who theorized that they wrote it into the plot because there are so many ex-mormons dumping their old scriptures off at the Goodwill store that they're really cheap now.

I haven't purchased printed scriptures in quite some time. First, I already have some, and second, I've got the entire gospel library on most every digital device.

        • I watched Cocaine Bear tonight. It was camp, sophomoric and dumb, but I was still oddly entertained. I mostly watched it because I had listened to an interview a while ago with Elizabeth Banks, who directed it, and she said the setup to movie, a man falling to his death from an airplane with a large stash of cocaine, was based on the same true event that the 4th season of Justified was based on.

Kind of like how Goodfellas and My Blue Heaven are two very different takes on the same story!

No one ever seems to talk about My Blue Heaven anymore. Really an underrated movie.

              • Watched the Dungeons and Dragons movie with my daughters and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. Pretty funny, really. More recognizable cast than I expected, too.

                • Also watched Witness for the Prosecution. I saw the movie before when I was pretty young but there was a lot about it I didn't remember. Pretty good story, though a bit dated. One thing I found funny was that as the ending credits began to roll, there was an audible spoiler alert issued to the audience instructing them not to share the ending with those who hadn't seen the movie yet.

I hate it. It's outrageous, egregious and preposterous.
