The "last movie I saw" thread

Saw Justice League, of course. I feel dumb saying a comic book movie is dumb because ... it's literally based on a comic book, not supposed to be serious fare. But they really can't figure out the tone to make it a smoother viewing experience. Had some comic relief in it via the kid that plays the Flash (probably one of the bright spots in the flick) and Aquaman looked cool, but they really seemed like they had a hard time fusing all the elements together in a non-contrived way. Oh well.

I thought it was watchable, and way better than Suicide Squad. I never saw the Batman vs. Superman movie.

Loving Vincent.

Artistically stunning. ~100 artists painted the entire movie in Van Gogh's style. Most of the story is based on people in Van Gogh's life that he painted. The dialogue was synced to the animation perfectly. Van Gogh loved his colors, and there's plenty of brilliant color in the movie. But I thought the black and white flashback scenes were even more beautifully done. We sat in awe watching how much work went into it.

All the actors had british accents, which I thought should have at least faked a French accent since that's where the movie takes place. But that's a minor quibble. A-minus for me, based pretty much on the audacity of making this kind of film.

You thought they should speak English with a French accent to make it more realistic since it was set in France?

Yes!

We did initially think it should have been in French with subtitles, but then the best part of the movie (for me) would have been gone; the dialogue syncing with the animation.

So we split the difference and thought it would have been better with fake French accents.

I've never heard of the movie but it sounds interesting. I'll check it out.

No worries. I knew it sounded weird. It was weird when we were critiquing accents after the movie

I think that was a change for the better. I thought Thor 2 was zzzzzzzzzzzz. Deadpool was cool, but the jokes were super ham-fisted and crude. By design, sure, but it wasn't as funny by a long shot.

Spending Thanksgiving week with some of the grandkids so it’s off to the movies… We saw Wonder and I was surprised I liked it, a lot. It’s the story of a facially deformed boy who, after years of homeschooling, starts attending fifth grade with the general population. It’s emotional and a tear-jerker but it seemed honest most of the time and was genuinely moving. It has also provoked some interesting discussions with the grandkids (ages 9-15). Apparently a lot of schools are making this required viewing as it focuses on bullying.

The makeup people got the facial deformity just right—disturbing but not Elephant Man-like, making it easier to warm up to the kid, who’s very good. And the actress (Izabela Vidovic) playing his sister was excellent; we’ll be seeing more of her. And finally, I liked the parents (Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson) way more than I expected—very believable as a tightly wound mama bear and a laidback but obviously loving dad and husband.

No doubt some will find it manipulative and overly sentimental, but that would be a minority view to be sure.

Today it was fourteen thumbs up. Next up, Coco.

It's a great book. I read it to my kids this summer, and we all loved it. I'm not sure I can take Julie Roberts as his mom, though. She seems like pretty much the opposite of Augie's mom in the book. Also, his face is supposed to be disturbing in the book. So they apparently got that wrong.

My 5th grade daughter read this book for class, and they took a field trip today to see the movie. In her words, the movie was "super cool," but she did not like that they left out the part where Auggie got a new dog. (?)

Hot Rod - I hadn't ever seen this one but saw a clip from a friend and decided to check it out. It whas dumb but unexpectantly entertaining. I whasn't expecting much in terms of plot, so I whasn't very disappointed when it turned out to be basically plotless, but some of the jokes/scenes where actually funny. Definitely not whorth more than 1.5 hours of your time, but not a whaste of time either.

Murder on the Orient Express - Fell asleep twice but the parts I did see were enjoyable even when I knew I had missed certain parts that would have helped me to follow the story. The concession line was out the door (it was a $5 movie night) so I couldn't stand in line to get a Coke to keep me awake. I may try to watch it again sometime in the future, when I'm more awake to see if I did actaully like it. MJ and hte older kids also said it was a bit "sleepy" so maybe I'm a bit justified in sleeping through this one. On the downside, Kenneth Branaugh's mustache was way too distracting and his accent got tiresome.

Rented Wind River. I really liked it the last time I saw it - when it was called Longmire. Seriously- same place in Wyoming, at least 5 cast members on both productions etc.

I was very interested to see the interaction between Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Both great actors, but Jeremy Renner has never had any chemistry with any of his leading women in any of his movies. Zilch. I wondered how the director would solve the problem this time around. Again, absolutely no romantic chemistry, more like buddies. This was a buddy movie with one of the buddies female.

But that rape scene- that haunted me. The thought that 5 guys return home drunk, see the young girl in bed with their compatriot, and silently, without ever discussing it, without ever thinking about it, or plotting, they all come to the same conclusion that together they will kill the man and rape the girl.

I thought it was a very original plot. The heartwarming story basically covers all of humanity. You would have to be a heartless cynic to not enjoy it. Pixar has basically become an automatic reflex activating my lacrimal glands. I had a wife on one side and a daughter on the other, and it took everything I had to not to break down into a blubbering idiot. I think my wife might have noticed my abdominal muscles clenching a few times. But I delayed wiping my eyes until a strategic scene change. I hope they didn't realize the full extent of my emotional breakdown.
