Probably the most interesting part of the doc was when they talked about Noel taking over a bit on vocals. Noel really wanted nothing to do with being lead singer at the beginning. He never really sang and didn't care to do it, plus he didn't have the personality needed to be the front man. However, after What's the Story was put out, Noel started to sing a bit more on backup and as lead on some of hte songs. Frankly, Don't Look Back in Anger requires a softer voice, which Noel has and Liam doesn't. I guess after Noel started taking lead on some songs, Liam started to get bitter and poutty to where he'd just leave the stage and Noel would have to finish up singing. That then thrust Noel even more into the lead singing parts and it kind of snowballed because most people stsarted to prefer Noel over Liam. It also didn't help that Liam really has no musical talent outside of singing and the tambourine.

I'm also a big fan of Talk Tonight, Wonderwall (of course), and the Masterplan. Great songs.

The documentary was interesting and well put together but I didn't like the format as much as other documentaries. They used that style where they layer on cutout pictures here and there to kind of emphasize points and it became a bit Mickey Mouseish after a while. There was also not much new. I've always known about the feuding in the band and how dysfunctional they were and also that Noel was the brains behind pretty much everything, including all the hit songs and Liam was really the front man that the band needed to get to where they ended up. Liam still sucks are singing, but his attitude and assholery were needed to elevate the band and fill a big hole that existed in music during that time. I was surprised at how average of musicians all the band members were adn they weren't shy about saying that. Oasis knew they weren't great musicians, just that they had hit songs and an attitude. I'd recommend it for people that liked Oasis, but others will find it tedious and boring.
Yeah I was amazed that they had zero talent, came up with some great songs against all odds, and still proclaimed themselves "the greatest band in England." What assholes.

      • Midnight in Paris.

I saw this film last night for the first time. I am a Woody Allen fan in general and I am not sure why I missed this when it came out. I liked it very much. Rachel McAdams was not very good in this one, but Owen Wilson was amusing and the rest of the cast was typical woody fare. It was light and not very deep, but it was a loving portrait of Paris in various costumes and it made a nice point.
        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

          I really liked that one.

          • I agree Midnight in Paris was one of Woody's best in the past decade or so. The clever historical bits with the various famous people was really entertaining. Another favorite scene was when the two couples (including the pompous but very good Michael Sheen character) are walking around Versailles chatting it up in one long take. Very well done.

Really? I thought she played the ugly American bitchy fiancé perfectly.

Just my opinion. I thought her timing was not very good and she seemed to flounder when they have the stereotypical Woody Allen quick exchange repartée. It felt to me like she kept stepping on others' lines. It was awkward. That said it is a minor complaint and did not prevent me from enjoying the film a great deal. In fact, I now want to retire to Giverny. And soon.

Perhaps I'll just have to watch it again.

One of my favorites. Combining Paris with nostalgia with Woody Allenish lines/characters and it's almost perfect for me. The Versailles scene (as PAC pointed out) is perfect and I've been to that spot a couple dozen times. The scene with the surrealists (Dali, Ray, Bunuel) is my favorite in the film. Cracks me up everytime...but it helps that I've been to the Dali museum.

My favorite thing about that movie is the way Ernest Hemmingway speaks in the same way his books read.

                      • Logan- Wooo! By FAR my favorite comic book movie. I'm sure Deadpool slaying at the box office directly contributed to this being written like it's written, released as a rated R movie, and including the only real Berserker Attack(s) on film. The film is set in 2029 (if I caught the year correctly) and Wolverine is old, he's tired, he's damaged, and he's definitely not f*king around. Fantastic bookend to Hugh Jackman's run as Weapon X.

PAC, creekster, and I argued in the Academy Award thread whether or not Affleck deserved his Best Actor award.

                              He didn't. My take:

The movie role challenged Affleck to play a morose, brooding loser with a Northeastern accent... so it was a real stretch for him, didn't come easy at all!

I talked my wife into watching it with me. "Trust me, honey, I hear that it is a great movie." She is pissed and my credibility took a hit.

I kept hoping something would happen to make it more interesting. Nope. It just plods along.
